Today we got the last parts of our self watering system for or rabbits , chickens and quail. We put a couple of 30 gallon barrels inside the coop up next to the roof. Then ran and input to the barrels from a hose. We have a toilet tank water valve in the barrels so they stay filled. We run a plumbing system over the cages and down into them with pvc pipe and watering nipples made for birds and rabbits. Each run has a ball valve on the end so we can shut off the input and drain and flush the lines to clean them or if we have a freeze (maybe three times a year) Now all of the fowl and rabbits have fresh water all the time and we don't need to do any thing but collect eggs every day and fill feeders about every three days. We were spending two hours a day cleaning and filling water jars. No pressure needed, its all gravity fed

Sounds like a great setup do you have to worry about algae building up in the tanks? Anything to make chores easier makes sense to me thanks for sharing ;D

Anything to make chores easier makes sense to me thanks for sharing ;D We add a little fish clarifier to the water barrels for algae we also add some meds and vitamins we used to put into the water jars. The system is sealed so I don't worry about algae too much. When we were cleaning jars for each water time we kept a barrel of water to dip them, then clean with a bottle washer, then refill. We started having some algae and mosquito larva in the open barrel. So we got a couple of small gold fish from the bait store and no more algae or larva.

Well the pics of the water barrels are gone but his great idea is still posted. Woodyz I didn't have to look far to find one of your great posts to bump. You're really highly intelligent and a great asset to this forum. Keep up the good work!

Still using that system today, except now the valve is in a cistern behind the chicken house. The 220 gallon run off barrels drain through 1" black pipe down hill to the 30 gallon elevated barrel which runs over into a drain that runs into a sealed cistern 500 gallons through a filter to another 500 gallon cistern where the toilet valve stops the flow in as long as the cistern is full. AS I said in another post I can pull from the last cistern with a pump to a secondary water pressure tank if I need to, but mostly its in case of fire. I have a gas powered water pump and the cisterns are at the tree line about 70 yards from the house
