Our Scout Troop will be leaving for a Boundary Waters trip in four weeks. Any tips or suggestions for a novice fisherman?

OHHHH I am so envious. You're going to have a great time.. I went 21 years ago with my brother who is now dying of cancer.. they will have the best time and it is such an adventure. When I went I was living in LA and I bought lures before I left. When I got there they had the same lures for sale (they were actually made in Alexandria, LA where I was living and bought my lures) So just read up on lake trout and pike and smallmouth.. and you'll be fine.. Good luck.. maps, compass and water filtration (although we used to just float off 30-40 feet from shore and drank right out of the water.. it was cold, clear and no problems). It was quite a feeling when they dropped us off on an island with a sign that said 'paddles only beyond this point' and left us for a week. We saw one other person the whole time and he was almost a half mile away. Great wildlife photo ops. ENJOY!!!!!

SO JEALOUS!!!!!!!
Spin or fly?
A spin rod will always offer the worm and a bobber. I would strongly suggest cast masters, crocodiles, and blue fox vibracks. Gold, silver, and what ever else catches your eye at the tackle shop. 15--20 LB. Test line. And a camera!!!!!

Are you actually going to be going into Canada? And are you going past the motor boat restriction? Or are you just going to Charles L. Summers?
Because if you are going to Canada you will love it (from what I've been told). I know a lot of people who used to go canoe up there for a couple weeks at a time. They said it was the clearest and best water they had ever been in. And some dang big fish from the pics I've seen.
I've seen lots of pics and videos, and it is definitely on my list of trips to take.

Thanks for the tips and info, everyone. The BW area is in northern MN on the Canadian border. We will put in near Ely, MN and will be portaging from small lake to lake over the course of 7 days. Paddling only and expect to do about 70 - 90 miles over the course of the week. I'll post some pictures when I get back.

It was indeed one of the most beautiful calm quiet places I've ever spent a week in. It is the cleanest, clearest (and in May, the coldest... the owner of the lodge said the ice had only been completely gone for a few weeks whenn I was there) water I've ever been on. In my earlier post I mentioned we literally drank right out of the lake, no filtration.. back in the 80s. Eagles, moose, lake trout and pike and smallmouth.. it was wonderful.. Take your hammock so you can laze around in the afternoons. It did get very windy during the day when I was there.. beautiful in the mornings.. but windy as the day progressed. Hard to discern the different islands sometimes when you're on the water.. they look like one and you can't really see that they are two.. so map compass and some keen observations, forward and backwards when you're paddling around the area. But it's an amazing place.. a bucket list kind of place
