First off this camp was only for troops to gather and do some training before being shipped off. It is now a city park and lots of good items to find if you don't get caught ;D ;D ;D This is what I believe to be a serving spoon used at the camp. Some of the spoon is missing and would have been nearly 16 inches long. This tells me it was used to stir food in a big old pot that would feed lots of people. Looks to be hammered iron and a hole in the end to hang on a nail. What do you all think, could it be from the civil war era

and the roll continues.. nice find.. I have no idea about how old it is though Being that it was found in a civil war camp and the depth it was found is a pretty good indicator that's what it is. Not 100 percent sure

WHAT A FIND!!! I think you nailed EXACTLY what it is.
I know that WCR is wanting to do some detecting, you might have to throw some pointers his way.
Great find.

Looking at it I would say it is not civil war era. I would think that the shape of the handle is to ornate. Would they not have been more of a straight instead of tapered? Just some thoughts on it.

A pity it's in such bad shape, but none the less it's a great find. I hope you're documenting all your finds. You know those membories do fail us sometimes.

You may be right but in this case the camp was right in town so they may have used many things that were not issued by the military. Of course I'm just speculating here but good call on your part. It does not seem to be military issued and would have had a open loop on the end for hanging. Thanks for the feedback this is why I like asking you guys what you think ;D

Too, any research you do, books, newspaper, etc.... Make a copy, date copy and write name of sources. Sources would be title of book and page, Newspaper city, state and page number, museum curator, do a write up with curator's name and date it. The reason to document written or oral sources is if you'd like to go back to that source for some reason, then you know exactly what the source of info was.

We would make a great team all good suggestions for sure. The museum curator here wants money to do any work so that is out , but there are other sources

The museum curator here wants money to do any work so that is out , but there are other sources OT, that's where my southern charm would come in handy. I'd have him tripping over his words to give me more info and especially HIS resources in no time. Ya just have to get him into a friendly chat and tell him how impressed you are with his knowledge and he'll start talking. ;D
