This is actually from a youtube channel but do any of you use functional shutters? Been thinking of adding them to my house but maybe use metal instead of wood.

Would love to find some of the metal rolladens that they use in Europe here in the states. full open plenty of light full closed total black out part open small slits for partial light and viewing out. Should say at a decent price. I think if I remember right unlike most USA style, European style was built right in to the window frame and not hung on the outside. www.furniturefromgermany.com/aufsatzrollade_partial_with_window_closeup.jpg

I've never understood the point of having shutters if they didn't actually function. That applies to a lot of stuff that's there for appearance's sake only.

I have the fake shutters on my house. The reason that they put them on is that without them the house takes a more modern looks. Believe it or not they do soften the look of the house. I know this because my wife had me up and down on a ladder so she could see the difference. I have to say that I agree with her on this one.

Shutters were very functional at one time, i see no reason for not using them today. The weakest part of a house is it's windows. With shutters you have a fortress. Great Idea

I have fake shutters on my house, but that's because i bought a foreclosure, got a great deal, and it had fake shutters on it!!!! Hardly a point for too much argument lol

in aus you see these type more than any other they roll down to fully protect the windosa and doors, they can even be made to be bullet resistant, operated by remote key fob just like an electronic garage door We had the Florida style roll down shutters quoted by 3 sources for our house. Granted, two windows are huge so I will give you the prices with and without. All the rest of the windows were deliberately standard sizes to save money. Most rooms have one window; MBR has 2 plus interior windows to a sunroom so those don't need shutters. North facing windows are only 2x3. Ready? With big front windows, and NON-electric raise/lower action the CHEAPEST was $29,000!!! Without the big 2 front windows, it dropped to $$26,000!!! I don't know about anyone else but that would have made the shutters the single most expensive thing in/on the house - more than the roof! So, we said no. We did get LAMI glass resistant up to 150 mph winds on all which only added a little to each window.

we had roll down shutters (built into the ceiling) in one house we lived in. They are great but can also give a false sense of security. the house was constructed of concrete (poured) with an exterior brick face.
burglars used a hydraulic jack to crack the concrete jamb and pulled it out. the metal track on one side was bent up and the shutters pulled right out.
Good thing we were not home.
