How many of you have pest control items in your preps? Rat traps, bugs, etc. We all preserve food, but do you have a plan for rats, racoons, and worse getting into your preps?
Something to consider.

Actually, I do carry 2 large rat traps and 2 smaller mouse traps...you know, the old wooden kind that snap the BLEEP out of your fingers 10 times before you get them set! I also have a nice roll of snare wire as well as a small live traps in assorted sizes suitable for animals from weasels to large dogs...and anything in between. I also have a few conabear trap...I hate pests.
Something I found that deters a lot of pests pretty good...moth balls. Make sure everything is sealed well, and throw some mothballs around...so far mice, rats, coons and such have avoided everything they are around!
This is also why I keep 2 large barn cats who are proven pest control and another indoors. As much as I hate the hair...he does a MUCH better job on mice, spiders, crickets and moths than I could ever do.

+1 on the barn cat. I found three dead mice this week my cat disposed of. Also keep a box of mouse traps little'uns and big'uns. Got two 5 gal bucket traps for mice as well. Check the foundation regularly where the utility/mechanical pipes come through and keep them sealed tight with Duct Seal.
Might need to improve my bug control measures though. Mostly keep several boxes of Borax and a big can of Demon WP with appropriate sprayer. Best deterrent for bugs is to keep the place spotless clean. No food scraps, etc. reduced bug population.

My biggest problem with bugs is during the colder weather...I keep a 2-3 week supply of firewood in my basement and at lesat 1-2 years worth at the back of the house...away from the house in warm weather...never have figured out how to get eh bugs all out of the wood before I have it brought in, though...any good ideas there?

Something to consider. -------- Good point and something I'm missing in my preps. Guess I'd better be getting an assortment of traps. Plus, I suppose some could be used to catch some small animals as a food source. Thanks for the tip. O.S.

Yep, I love tractor supply.. I have purchased the two traps they have on sale sometimes as a package.. about $29 for both. Someone else on here had posted somewhere else that I don't remember the former name of that I don't belong to anymore had mentioned the larger 'rat' traps to use for squirrels and such.. drilled a hole in the end of it and secured it to a tree with some wire so I bought four of those along with regular mouse traps.. I personally don't own a cat.. but the two that hang around seem to be doing okay for me.

Yep - pretty well set on rodent, pest and termite control. For those of you in the South - don't overlook termites.

In a SHTF situation what would you recommend for termite protection? I had not thought of that one. I realize that very few probably have temiticide (that really works) laying around, so it is something that should be part of your storage planning in my view. Your new pole barn might serve as a good example. Any wooden structure, especially in the South where termite pressures are the highest, is vulnerable to the little critters. A preventive treatment is the way to go IMO, which will be one less thing that you have to deal with at a time where you will have enough on your plate. Subterranean termites cause a massive amount of damage annually. While most species are not "fast eaters", some are. They may not attack your food source, but they can compromise the storage for them as well as your shelter. Most termiticides are available over the counter or the net. They are not hard to apply. If anybody that is contemplating "doing it themselves" I'd be happy to offer any advice that I can. Properly applied termiticides will last at least 5 years (probably longer), but I would recommend treating every 5 years.

There are a few termiticides (but only a few) that I would consider worth the investment, but I will not treat anything I own with anything other than Termidor. (That's all I'll use for my customers as well)

Great thread guys and a eye opener for some. I have several rat traps, mouse traps, and now thanks to sink moth balls...man, those things really stink. Btw, they are great for playing tricks on people lol
