The top blade is a Camillus - circa 1970s military issue . The "baby Kabar " is one of the best woods knives . The top guards have been removed . The top hilt guard is for deflecting an opponents attack in a knife fight - something which I do not recommend . These are personal favorites for "survival" knives and have been used on many hunts and outdoor excursions . When I had my first issue knife in the Army - there was a mentor and friend - Sgt Major "Buck" McAllen . The first thing we did with our issue blades , was to hacksaw the top guard away . Somebody got the message . Kabar in D-2 . Some hollow handled blades are ok , but the majority of solid tang knives are inherently stronger . The sheath on this blade holds more gear than a hollow handled knife and this particular blade is stronger than "most" hollow handled knives . Attachments:

I would never buy a knife with a hollow handle.

I would never buy a knife with a hollow handle. Chris Reeve - Randal and a few other makers produce some extremely strong knives with hollow handles . Solid steel hollow handled blades are ok , but a round solid steel handle is not comfortable (to me) and they are cold while field dressing game in very cold weather . Round handles don't have the "orientation factor" when used in a hurry . I like to know the orientation of a knifes cutting edge in a hurry and round handles roll in my hand during hard use . Crashdives blades have a palm swell handle and are the epitome of a well designed knife - very comfortable for long use . Some folks say - All necessary gear is in that hollow handle if you loose your gear and have only the knife . I carry a mil pistol belt with a large fixed blade - wire saw and decent folder - other components in a 30 round M-16 clip pouch . If I loose that belt , I reckon I'm up the proverbial creek without a paddle . The hollow handle concept never made much sense to me , but other people have had different (Hands On) experiences .

Truth is I never gave it much thought until you mentioned round handle vs oblong handle,Good point.

Hollow handle solid steel (i.e. Cold Steel Bushman or some E-tohs) are excellent tools and knives. I wrapped mine in athletic tape followed by paracord. Comfortable and super durable. Hollow handle with a bolted or pinned on blade is bad. Rat tail tang is weak where the blade thins out to the rat tail. 3/4 tang is pretty good so long as it is pinned to the handle in at least 2 places.
Deciding which type of handle is sturdy is a simple question of where is the fulcrum? If the fulcrum is at a thin point (rat tail) or a joint (hollow handle with a bolted on blade) it's inherrently weak and will break at that point.
