I have Coleman Pa Plus water purification tablets which I can't find an expiration date for. Doing some research I came upon another forum where one member did some extensive to a degree, water treatment experiments without filtration using eight techniques. He posted this Aug. 27, 2011 and thought it was interesting to read and you might get something out of it too. These are: boiling water sample for 5 mins. " " " " 10 mins. using tincture of iodine using household bleach Micropur Chlor-Floc Coleman/Portable Aqua tablets Polar Pure americanpreppersnetwork.net/viewtopic.php?f=607&t=13741

looks like a good boil for 10 mins is the cheapest alternative with chor-floc giving the best visual results, i dont mind cloudy water as long as it is bug free

I like Potasium permanganate for treating water, powder form I do not believe expires, plus is a first aid treatment, and fire starter Bleach 6 month starts breaking down, the coleman tablest are 1 year, tinture 2% is 7 year. You can also pasturize water when boiling is not possible 149 degrees for 20 minutes or higher temp for less or equal time. When boiling water I only heat until rolling boil then let it cool.Another option all should know is Sodis method.

boiling is boiling if its just started or for 10 minutes its all the same, filter it then heat it until it boils.
however somethings are not killed by boiling, some microbes, some chemicals, some other things.
at home but lack of fresh water, turn it into steam and recondense it to water is about the best you can do if you don't want to treat it with something.
I like to treat with pool shock, then boil.
don't like the taste throw in some koolaid.
