yesterday. We had leftover tomatoes from a garden and decided to can them.
Everything went good until the time was up to take them from the water bath. As soon as I lifted the quarts out of the water the lids would pop immediately, even before I could place them on the counter to cool. I have canned for over 50 years and never had this happen before.
I read on a post here about the new procedures for preparing the seals, but did not think that would affect the way the lids popped when cooling.
Has anyone experienced this before? I have researched on the internet but found nothing to explain. What should I do now, leave them and do the old "smell test" when we go to use them if there is clearly no mold on top. I am baffled but do not want to lose 14 quarts of maters either.
As usual thanks in advance for your input and help.

If the seal is good then I wouldn't worry about it. Unscrew a couple of the bands and see if they lift up with a tiny bit of pressure. I made jelly Tuesday and a couple of the lids popped as I was lifting them out of the canner and the rest soon after. All the seals are good.

Thanks, the seals are all good this morning now that they are completely cooled. Just never happened before and did not want to take a chance. The kitchen was warm with no drafts and couldn't figure it out. Thanks again CGU Jim

I made jam tonight and had the same thing happen. They were pinging as I was taking them out of the canner or shortly after putting them on the counter to cool. I'm wondering if they are possibly making the lids thinner so they don't need as much pressure to seal? I will have to compare them to some older lids and see.

Thanks, I was using all new seals also. I was wondering if, maybe, it had something to do with the new way of preparing seals I tried.

I have had the lids pop as soon as removing them from the water bath a few times.

Thanks, I feel much better now. Waiting for my new pressure canner to arrive today so I can do my excess beans, some chicken stock, and get on to drying some hot chili peppers and herbs. Had a nice crop of all this year, ceptin the chicken which we bought on sale.
