Most everything has some kind of expiration date on it and thats why we rotate, right? That said, does expired really mean its not good anymore? For instance, I ate some tuna the other day that had expired about 3 months ago and it was just fine. So, if my SPAM is 6 months or a year over the date, do I just throw it out (provided of course the cans are not swollen, dented or broken somehow)? What about MRE's that go a year or two over? How about all my box dinners? (Just for the sake of argument, lets just say everything is stored indoors and kept reasonably cool and dry.)
What about meds? Will pain pills stored well not work three days after the expiration date? 3 months? Essentially what Im wanting to discuss is, how much weight does one give the printed exp date?

Most medicine will lose "power" over time but won't hurt you. Pain meds I am not sure about. I knoe most vaccines lose some after expiration date.

Be careful with the meds...check each kind out before hand. Some things like Tetracycline will turn toxic and can kill you when they reach a certain age. But other things are fine, just not as potenet as stated...you just have to keep them stored properly.
I am wondering if I store meds in vacc sealed packs in a cool dark place how much time that will add to the "shelf life" as well. Good question.

The way you store things makes a big difference. Take MREs for example. Shelf life for those is based on storage temps. But even afterwards they are probably fine although taste and color may suffer. In the end, try and rotate your stock and then if you are a little past due, it probably won't matter. The issue though with some antibiotics as was pointed out is that they can become toxic. Be careful with those. Also with cans watch for cans that are bulged out. That's a bad sign also.

Most food stuffs carry a "best by" date. That simply means ta taste it's best er hold it's texture it should be used by that date. It may well still be eadible fer a long period after that but not taste as good er change it's texture.
We use a fair amount a canned goods that have gone past there date an they be just fine. Now ifin the can be bulgin, don't even open it, giver a toss cause it ain't safe ta eat.

How could you tell if an MRE has gone bad? They taste so bad even when they are in date. Sorry but I had to create my own foods and not worry with the MRE's. I guess if I were starving they might taste okay but I would hate to think I had to live on them for awhile.

They are however, high calorie, very durable, and transportable. I would hate to use them for any real length of time though unless I was starvin Marvin.

Just sent an email to a couple pharmacists I know asking about meds in general and their shelf life. I am not sure how much more info they will have as I am not sure where the expertise is but I will let you know what I find out.
