I prefer a bag. I don't have statistics but I think they seem to me to have more warmth/insulation than a blanket of equal weight.

I agree on using the bags for several reasons. Contractor bags come in 55-60 gallon sizes and their thicknesses range from 3-6 mils. Their uses are countless from a sleeping bag to large water catchments. They can also be used as rain gear or slit open to make a pup tent. Because they are so useful I'd pack more than one as they are much lighter in weight and take up very little room in a pack. One more thing, if you have an emergency blanket to wrap around yourself when using a contractor bag to sleep in it should work just as well or better than a sleeping bag plus they're light weight also.
I based my answer on your question not thinking of you meaning sleeping bags. I wouldn't change my answer though even over a sleeping bag.

Well, i was going to say a wool blanket because it was more versatile (make a tent, etc.). Then USCGME2 pointed out that you can unzip a bag. DUH!
I have never compared, but wool is supposed to be very warm. I would think that a wool blanket would be smaller to pack than a sleeping bag. I seem to recall that some sleeping bags don't work well when wet, but a wool blanket is supposed to (isn't it?).
