For those times that you must pass the time with nothing else to do, what do you do with the time?
I realize for most, those times are few and far between, but even for the most active busiest of us all, there are times when we must simply wait patiently.
What are some of the things you do for this, and could you do them for say two weeks while the smoke, ash, and fallout pass?

Read. I can get so absorbed in a book I don't realize hours have passed and I have a hard time putting them down once I start. Also once I start a book, especially in a series, I can't get through it fast enough to get to the next one...and that even includes ANY kind of books....even encyclopedias. I know...I'm a lil nuts.
I have (at last count) over 12,000 books in my personal library, although most are still in boxes on shelves in the basement waiting to be unpacked...and I have read most of them at least once if not more. I love to read. If the internet were not available to be able to search and read things, I would be more than happy reading my books.
Of course that would be during the down time between chores and such...but I would have ot say Reading....or sleeping when the chances hit.

What would you do without books? Reading is a good answer, but what would be your alternative?

If I may use a very loose definition, cognitive thinking. This, even today can and does occupy much of my spare time/thoughts. Not so much as in a true sense of introspect but more along the lines of a mechanical or here and now nature. Observation and study of whatever happens to be in my immediate surroundings. With any given point in time or place where I may be there are literally thousands of questions to be asked and worked out with nothing more than my own mind. Volumes can and have been written, I suppose on this subject, but my use of this is very elementary at best. As far as the truer sense of cognitive thought I will venture there as well at times, the who am I and who are they or what does this or that really mean. But for the most part I am much more comfortable with trying to answer things such as what, how, why, where, who and the like of physical objects in my surround.

Good stuff Wtrfwlr. A wise man sees more from the bottom of a well than a fool sees from a mountain.
I tend to evaluate my present, future and history. Problem solving, evaluating my current position against my desired position and course, and studying my past to evaluate and learn from success and failure.

What would you do without books? Reading is a good answer, but what would be your alternative? A combination of many things... Clean the place top to bottom, slowly, one room at a time (although it is already clean). Finish with my remodeling projects...even if they are a lost cause (I would live to have my floors and walls finished and since I already have the materials, why not) Spend extra time with all of my animals. Use my manual lawn mower to keep the grasss in the yard and orchard cut. Work my garden and assorted beds. Walk my field to collect seed heads for feeding my birds that would not be allowed to roamn at such a time. Collecdt dead wood from around the place to add to the fire wood piles Sleep when the chances arise during the day so I can be awake at night as much as possible to keep an eye on things (knowing my luck, thats when evil doers would hit). Sit on my porch swing and watch the squirrels chase each other and take in what nature has to offer while there is still a chance. I love solitudce and quiet, so to me, it would be no big deal. If the neighbors are not gone, I would relish in games of cards and tea parties with little Dana, shooting BB guns and building forts with with Gabe & Toby, and enjoy playing with and watching little Brett grow from being a baby to a little man. Not to ,mention sitting on the porch with their lil momma and just enjoying the chance to be a woman visiting with my best girlfriend once in a while. I am sure if I had to, I could find plenty to keep my mind busy. Reading would be but a luxury I dought I would get to do much of...much like it is now. There is simply ALWAYS so much work to be done on a farm, adn I am sure if something were to happen, I would nto have a chance to relax and sit down much...3 of the 4 people in my support group are very ill and would need me to take care of them, and the 4th, I am more than sure, would leave with the neighbors when they go, just because he knows where his chances of survival and having a family would be...and its not at my place (especially if his parents are no longer around). So I would have to do my best to take care of Jim, Carol and Amber and hope for the best...then when I am alone...I would just have to deal with whatever life throws at me...much like I do now. With my head held high and my heart beating hard...and THE good book in my hand if I am lucky enough to get to relax.

For the times I wasn't trying to make things better in that environment I've gathered some instruments and I have also bought several games, lots of paper and pencil for writing stories, books to read. On those really slow boring days I could pick up the millions of rocks around here and do something worthwhile with them..

I thought we were trapped in the house, after a nuke, waiting out the radiation? In tight quarters with no physical release I tend to start noticing random patterns in the room. Tiles, spots, dots, cracks etc, then I have to count them. The paneling and wood doors will have abstract pictures in the grain. Heaven forbid I turn over a bucket of pennies....then it's copper/non copper and by date in little piles. Make it stop!!!!!

Dink if I was trapped inside like that, knowing I could not go out, the first thing would be I would think of ALL the things I could be doing Outside. Then I would get out my mini lathe, and start turning precision tooth picks. One, two, three..........

Redneckidokie, you are correct...
Yes, the idea is that for whatever reason, you cannot go out for two weeks. Fallout blowing over, waiting on a virus to die out, or simply waiting for the zombies to starve.
If stuck in a bunker for weeks, what's your plan, how do you pass the time?

Fallout blowing over, waiting on a virus to die out, or simply waiting for the zombies to starve. If stuck in a bunker for weeks, what's your plan, how do you pass the time? OH!!! I can't go ouside.... Finish laying the tile in the hallway, storage room and bathrooms Finish the new second bathroom thats for public use. Finish painting the walls in the hallway, kitchen, diningroom and storagerooms Hang new drywall and cover with malemene in both bathrooms Refinish the kitchen cabinets Pull the carpet up in the livingroom, bedroom & computer room and get started putting down the wood flooring Pull the panels off the livingroom walls and put up the new drywall and the antique cedar wainscoating I salvaged from an old farm house. Keep the microgreens popping up fresh so I have new greens to eat every day with my canned foods. Go through my stock and set an eating shedule/regimen....or whatever you want to call it...I know the word I want...but my brain won't let my fingers say it. Sorry. Nap when I can, I never have been one to sleep longer than a couple hours at a time anyways. I would also finally have time to finish knitting my queen size blanket as well as making myslef a couple of old time style quilts. Since my animals would be in my basement, I would be down there regular to clean and pile up manure and cover with sweet pdz to keep odor down and nutralize amonia, and hose urine down one of the several floor drains, and feed/water as needed. I am sure I could find more than enough to keep me busy indoors for an extended period of time...whether I was alone or not. Some of it may sound stupid for doing, like working on my remodeling...but it is something I want done, and it would occupy my mind...maybe even giving me some off handed hope for the future.

I work very hard to pick information from the train of thoughts circling between my ears.. while not the best or most knowledgable here i retain nearly everything i have said done or learned. The problem is catching the right bits of informatiin for a given task or situation. The second problem is communicating what transpires from that cycle to others. So my mental exercise is a constant struggle to create order from the chaotic and make practicle use of it

I only get two weeks? I've been burning the candle at both ends for the last 4 years and I am worn out. I would sleep as much as possible. Get rested up from the previous work and get rested up for whatever might be in the future.
I don't get bored. If I get a little stir crazy from in activity I would do some type of exercise. Push ups, sit ups whatever. Make lists of things to do once the ash clears. etc.
