As promised. This ferrocement tank is 7' diameter, 6' tall on main cylinder, about 7' tall to opening.
Calculating volume: pi R squared x height x 7.48(cubic feet to gallons).
my tank: 3.5x3.5 =12.25 x3.14(pi)=38.47(rounded)x 7' tall=269.26(rounded)x7.48(7.48 gallons per cubic foot) 2014 gallons
So about 2000 gallons capacity. Dont forget to use the inside diameter to calculate.
Another example: 4' wide by 3' tall
2x2x3.14x3x7.48= 281 gallons
More useful math. How big of a tank do i need? How much water can I collect?
Calculating potential rainwater collection. In my neck of the woods rainfall is about 12" per year on average. My roof is about 2000 square foot. 1 foot per year x 2000 ft= 2000 cubic foot per yearx7.48(cubic ft to gallons) or 14960 gallons of water per year on average. Keep in mind variables like gutter leakage, overflow, cleanout bypass etc.
It is said the average person needs 1 gallon per day min.. 2 gallons is better to figure in hygene, clothe, dish washing etc. Remember this is minimum. What people really use on average is around 50-100 gallons per day per person. Add in pets, livestock, feed crops, gardens, fishponds etc.
The design I used is said to be sufficiently strong for up to a 25,000 gallon tank. That's a BIG water tank!

GET THE GROUND LEVEL. easy way, find a straight 2x4 and set a level on top. Move the board around to check the area that will become the concrete floor especially where the forms will be set up.
