Actually this is a great article.....and the ability to keep people at a distance and defend your self is really handy.
With bouts of Gout flaring up, waking with a cane has become a regular occurrence from time to time....I find it very useful in a lot of ways....
The links were a throw back and something most people wouldn't even think of these days....but I would like to visit a Martial arts course on the use of the cane or even straight stick.

I use a walking stick and it helps me to walk with a straighter back. Also if I need to take a break I lean a little on the stick for support. My walking stick has a cleat under the rubber tip for rugged terrain. I've meant to give it more of a sharpened point but haven't done it yet. Too, the top is heavier so it would make a great bat to swing as another weapon. If someone manages to wrestle my purse from me, my intentions are to whack the perp with all my might behind the knees or at least throw it in that area to knock the azz down. Then he/she are mine, all mine!!!! He'll be begging the LEO's to save him, I kid you not.

Actually I have a couple of canes that belonged to my FIL and WWII Paraplegic vet....and have made use of them a lot. Besides being my FIL, I also considered him a great friend and mentor.....and use his canes when I need them remembering that he needed them to just get by.
It's like he's walking with me......
Have always used a walking stick in the woods and neighborhood walks.
