I'm sure, with all the tracking the cell phone can do, that there's a compass somewhere, but I've never found it in mine, nor have I really looked for it (yet). However, for those with digital watches, all they really need to do is draw a proper clock face with the hands set to the digitally displayed time, then go from there.
On a similar note, I've lost track of all the students at my school who literally cannot tell time. Sure, they can all read a digital clock, but it's meaningless since they cannot read a proper analog clock face. This is taught in 3rd grade, as are the terms "quarter past, half past, quarter of". Once the kids are fluent with quarters, they expand to "ten of, twenty past" and all the rest.
Having moved away from multiplication table drill (and every other math drill), it's no wonder the kids lack facility with simple math. The one third grader I see after school Monday - Thursday will not have these difficulties as long as he's with me. His teacher has no problem with my old-school methods, nor does his mom. Because he eagerly awaits his mom's arrival each day, he's extra motivated to master the clock face and all the math that's connected to it. I wish I could say the same for the older kids.
As an aside, no one in the school is comfortable with "military" time. When MW studied Italian in high school, his teacher ensured classroom facility with it because that's what's used in Italy. My students complain when they ask, "What time is it?" and I tell them to look at any of the 4 clocks (all have real clock faces) in my room. They invariably wait for the 1 or 2 kids to "translate" into digital time and are dumbfounded when I explain that 1:00 P.M. is really 1300.
