This is an update on the Recon 1 i changed to several months ago as my new EDC blade. I wanted to give the knife some extended woods time and normal EDC use time before giving my final thoughts on the blade
Specs:
4 inch Tanto blade with chisel grind
G10 handles
cheap black blade coating
Cold Steel Triad locking system.
Blade material: AUS 8 heat treated
handle is 5 3/8 inches long
4 position pocket clip.
My first impressions of this knife were mixed as I have never owned a tanto blade before and was not sure if I would like it. The knife was on markdown @ Academys for $49 and I had to give it a try:) NOW THAT i HAVE HAD TIME TO PUT IT THROUGH ITS PACES I feel as though I can give a ore informed review.
Ergonomics:
This knife feels REALLY good in the hand. the hand locks in on the handle quite well and you dont have to worry about your hand riding up onto the blade even when performing stabbing chores and the tanto blade makes stabbing quite effective. Knife is comfortable when doing camp chores for extended periods with no hot spots.
Utility:
The Recon performed all tasks assigned to it. Some were quite easy and some were just adiquate. Using the tanto blade is a learning curve for bushcraft and lets face it, a tanto is simply NOT THE BEST CHOICE FOR BUSHCRAFT. tHAT SAID, IT is EXCELLENT as an EDC work blade. It is great for cutting rope with the serations and rips through cardboard, tin, shrinkwrap, airlines. Now when it comes to finer tasks where precision cutting with the tip is needed it is cumbersome and clumsy. Will it do the joB? Yes, but it is not the best choice for whittling/carving or any detailed work.
CONSTRUCTION:
A TANK! I lost the first one and bought another only to find it two weeks later...Having 2 now I DECIDED to see how much punishment it could take. The knife took everything i threw at it and tossed it right back and asked " What else ya got?" batoning...chop batoning, digging holes in wood, prying ,stabbing ...It just laughed at it:)
Final Thoughts:
Is this the knife I want with me on an extended stay in the wood? No. Would it work? yES
As an EDC / self defense folder I give it 4 out of five stars. iT IS COMFORTABLE , SECURE, RUGGED and a good value for the money. The pocket clip allows for mutiple carry options and is deep carry. Blade coating is crap though. Its very light and thin aand you will forget its in your pocket.(ah, I lost it for example)
Hope this is helpful:)
