I picked up one of these handy little tools to work on some long neglected kitchen knives..
It is a small hand held belt sander that comes with 6 belts (you can order different ones or more of the same three types that come with it) and holy smokes does it put an edge on!
I had to re-profile the edges from a double bevel to a convex which is said to stay sharp longer but I just finished up with my SOG Government Agent. I thought it was pretty sharp to begin with but WOW what a difference!
so far I have used it on my Gerber camp axe, and every knife in the house minus the Crashblades due to the fact they are still razor sharp as when I received them. The camp axe took more work to narrow the wide single bevel and it still isn't quite where I want it but its leaps and bounds better at edge retention. After splitting wood for the smoker and over a hundred strikes on hardwoods, you can still make feather sticks that a Mora would envy.
About 70 bucks on amazon but IMHO well worth it (that amount included 12 more belts)
If you don't have one find someone to let you try it.
Sharpens: hunting knives, axes, hatchets, shovels, scissors, serrated and standard edges, lawn mower blades etc. and FYI it is cool as all get out to pull out a camp axe you can shave with!

Most of those type tools are capable of using a cork type polishing belt with buffing rouge as final touch. Scary sharp!

I thought about picking one up but was concerned it would take off a lot of metal, do you find that a concern?

By far the fastest and easiest sharpener I have ever used....I have never been able to free hand sharpen a knife to a razor edge. That little sharpener will do it on anything from stainless on down and do it very quickly as long as you have a semblance of edge on it to begin with.... Usually 4-5 passes on each side. That is about 12 seconds or so...
I have mainly only used the medium grit belt for most stuff and then a couple of licks on a ceramic and finish with literally a couple more licks on a strop. It will leave most knifes far sharper then I really like for a working edge if the Bosslady is going to be using it...

I've almost picked one of those up a couple of times. Glad to hear they are worth it.

If you follow the directions there is not need to worry about to much metal removed. I tried it out on some old kitchen knives first to get the timing right for letting off the button as the tip goes through the guide
