Ok, we had a boot thread and the thread ended with this comment from Jimmy.
I would like to add this too. It doesn't matter what you spend on boots if you don't have exceptional socks to go with them. IMHO. I spend a good bit on socks too. They save your feet.
Just saying.
Now that we know and affirm that the sock is very important, What sock do you wear/recommend?
I'll start. My favorite is the Marino wool by "Smartwool."

Merino is used by a lot of manufacturers. For those saying marino wool only, is there a specific brand?

Years ago in the USMC your boots and socks were always one of the more important parts of your gear. You can get by with almost any shirt, but if you are going to walk all day you better good boots and good socks.
And you better keep those socks dry or change them every chance you had.
Wool wicks away moisture and drys out faster than other "sock material"
But there is a science to sock material too. Used to be 100% wool with wool on wool padding for the wear points. But wool bunches, it doesn't slide. It insulates until it gets wet.
Almost non of the wool socks you buy today are 100% wool, unless you specifically buy 100% and you should not.
Like boots, your socks should be specific to your need. Is it a cold/hot weather application? Are you walking/hiking/hunting/standing? Is it wet/dry
Having the right boot first is going to do a lot to protect your feet from the cold/wet/etc. But you still need to have different socks.
If you grab a jacket before you go out you make a decision, because its snowing and its cold, you need a warm one and one that's water resistant.
If I am going to sit in a duck blind in KY in Dec I am not going to wear the same boots I wear everyday in SC. And if I wear a different boot I want to wear a different sock too.
But I also don't want to have to keep five drawers full of different socks. And I want the sock and boot to be mated. In other words my wet cold weather boots might be slightly bigger because the sock(s) I wear with them for cold wet weather are not the same socks I wear with a warm weather hiking boot.
OK! Enough with the wordy explanation of why.

Good point. Different socks for hiking vs deer stand sitting. I believe in wicking technology and buy appropriate socks. $9-12 per pair for serious stuff.

Merino wool socks are about all I wear with boots. They can be a bit pricey sometimes, but they do as advertised. I have maybe 6 pair or so that I got at Farm Supply, with the Carhart name brand. Caught them at clearance price. 2 pairs were $5. Regular price was like $9.99. Wally World has Marino wool socks. Your feet will love you for it.... Jimmy
