Cyalume is a specific brand name for these lights. As such, specific chemistry, chemical purity so forth will play a definite role in how well, and how long they function. Diphenyl oxalate is what Cyalume uses. Some companies add a weak base which makes the decomposition of diphenyl oxalate into phenol and eventually carbon dioxide more energetic (brighter).
Changes in color will necessarily change chemical composition in greater and lesser degrees. It will also impact long term stability.
9,10-Diphenylanthracene is the additional chemical compound for blue as it turns out. The downside is once activated, it has a shorter lifespan than either green (9,10-Bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene), or red (Rhodamine B). The upside is the blue is most stable for long term storage.
The red for what its worth is the brightest and works in a different manner than the others. It also burns out the fastest and with the shortest shelf life for the same reason.
What CL has done is discover the longest shelf life variant of light sticks. The jokers in the crowd should be paying attention instead of giving her a rash of crap.
For myself, I hadn't thought to consider it as I rotate stock based on the published data. That after the research that yielded the above information, turns out to be short sighted in the event no more of them can be obtained. The latter is definitely a possibility given what these lights decompose into to generate that light to begin with. I can see them being branded environmentally unfriendly and restricted or banned even though that would be horsesh**.
Bottom line is, it's important if any of you believe there is a valid need for these items. If not, just ignore this post.

Thanks cwi for the extra info. I'm sure the stooges are paying attention, it's all good. I really like Okie's idea of trying different name brands. I had a few of the Cyalume lightsticks which were given to me actually by another member. As you can see I've been holding on for dear life to them. They're my oldest so I decided to open it to see if they still lit or should I just throw them. If anyone else would like to share their findings of other different brand lightsticks, feel free to add it to this thread to keep the info together.

CWI, how did you know which colors lasted longer and are you talking about the Cyalume Lightsticks?

CWI, how did you know which colors lasted longer and are you talking about the Cyalume Lightsticks? The chemicals in question. As a general rule of thumb, the more energetic they are for the same volume, the shorter the time they will last. Basic conservation of energy aka first law of thermodynamics. With that in hand, looking around for reviews of brightness, and looking into the chemicals used provided the rest.

"What CL has done is discover the longest shelf life variant of light sticks. The jokers in the crowd should be paying attention instead of giving her a rash of crap." - CWI
Nobody is giving anybody a ration of crap, as you suggest. Nobody is saying her information isn't valuable. But maybe you could crack one of your sticks and 'lighten up'. Cause that paragraph wasn't necessary to provide all of your scientific pontificating.
You may have noticed CL and I often engage in back and forth bantering. Now if CL thinks I'm a 'moron' or 'a stooge' because of my posts she can let me know. Then I'll know the tenor of our bantering has changed.

Sorry - My intent was simple joking among friends, while gaining information. I like to laugh - so it will be difficult, but I will try to avoid doing that to other people's threads.

It's all in fun Marc. I agree some times I forget that we are not all in a closed room environment, and we kinda digress into high school locker room fun.

Ok, no new ones yet. Found 3 old milsurp cyalumes from exp/96. Guess what? 0 nothing totally dead as expected. Number 4 was a coleman blue from 2009. Popped at 1830, lit up dimmly, enough to read normal print up close. Will see how long it lasts to the end. More to follow.
Update: WallyWorld is OuT of light sticks. I bet TW cleaned em out. LoL
The blue one I started earlier is coming up on 5 hours, very dim, nearly gone.
Well folks by the turn of the sixth hour..she was a goner. Barely visible in total darkness. I plan to test more, but this was an eye opener. Never thought of them expiring.

Thanks cwi for the extra info. I'm sure the stooges are paying attention, it's all good. Okay, let's see if I can think this through straight and clear up a mess or just drop out of site. By the word stooges I meant anyone who has the inclination to make fun of the way I phrase some of my posts because of my heritage or just to pick on me in general. I "liked" each and every posts from about five different members, ergo "stooges". That's what makes my world go round. Yes, I'm sure the thread post was read because of the silly comments being posted. By the words "it's all good", I was telling CWI it didn't bother me about the posts the "stooges" posted which he thought weren't warranted. I promise you, it didn't bother me at all. I did mention to TW not to highjack my thread but I knew damn well that went through one ear and out the other. It isn't normal for him not to pick on someone. I can't make it any clearer than that. TW's feelings got hurt, mine got hurt and I'm sure a few others had their feelings hurt. Why? Because I wanted to review a very old light stick I had and how I discovered some info about its shelf life. The End.

And still "it's all good". My apologies to anyone I took a swipe at.
