I have an uncle that lives on a larger sailboat and has done so for over 30 years that I am aware of and he would not trade it for anything. If he decides he wants a change of scenery he will just pull anchor and sail to another location... He has lived all up and down the California coast. Strangely enough he is a pretty conservative guy and very much anti big government and would fit in just fine here...

The IT guy at a company I consulted for lived full time on a boat
One of my contingency plans for SHTF would be converting a river barge into a living area

A typical cargo barge is freaking huge! Have you ever seen any plans for a home/shelter built from one? These are typical inland river barge sizes. Its impressive when they are moving 5x7 on the lower Miss. mblx.com/dimensions
