Had to control 17 11 year olds today in the woods, started out with learning about maps and general knowledge about maps, and I have to say I was impressed by these kids knowledge on the subject, there were even a few who were able to guide me around by using a map. Second step was compass... now it got more troubley, had put out six items around in the woods that the kids had to find, using a centre point as the point to walk out from, they were given a decent intro in how to use a compass to walk on degrees, then were given degree numbers for the route they had to walk (straight ahead in this and that direction) Some of them figured it out, others... not so much, and much blame was put on compasses showing wrong direction etc, was highly entertaining. Spent a great deal of time on cooporation and trust games, was fun.

Sounds cool! Wish my daughter and her husband had had the advantage of such a time. I tease them that they can't find their way out of a paper bag! LOL!

Good for you doing your part in educating young people. I guess not all youth is lost and that is great.
