Survival can sometimes be complicated and very mentally stressing. On the flip side sometimes the difference between living and dying is so very simple.
One example of this is simply letting someone you trust know where you are going! Time after time I hear stories of folks lost in the wilderness during a blizzard, etc. that would have been saved had they done one simple thing. Make one phone call.
One of many examples of this is the story of Aaron Ralston who had to cut off his own right arm while trapped in a crevice during a rock climb. One phone call to his parents would have saved his arm.
Mrs S and myself let one another know where we are.... when we "are on the move." If anything goes wrong we know where to start looking! If a car breaks down on the way to town during a 99 degree day, guess what....you might be in a world of crap.
If I go into the woods around here, I let her know when I will be back. If I am not back by then she knows something went wrong. Maybe I got snake bit, maybe I broke a leg, maybe a wildcat got me, etc.
It still amazes me on a daily basis I see life threatening situations that could have been avoided by simple COMMUNICATION. One quick note, one quick call, one minute of your time max!
Food for thought. What say you?

My hubby and I do the same thing. We ALWAYS know where each other is. When we were first married, it irritated the hell outta of me. I thought it was just jealousy. Now, I realize just how important it is. Unfortunately, many people feel they should be able to come and go as they please without notifying anyone. Big mistake, as you mentioned. Even if for some reason, you can't reach them by phone (they,re outside, in a meeting, whatever)...leave a note. Again, if something happens, it gives everyone a starting point to start searching.
Good advise and good topic. Thanks spartan!!

Spartan,
We agree with that assessment and practice the same around here.
