Jim Jones and I went GH hunting again today.I did get one but it wasn't a killing shot. After I shot it i seen it fall over and thought it was dead. I went down to pick it up and it was gone so I looked all over for it but no GH. Then I seen blood on some weeds and looked harder and found it in it's hole still alive but unable to move. I called Jones over and he finished it off. It's just a ground hog but I dislike for any animal to suffer. I always try to make the best and quickest kill shot I can, no matter what i shoot. I'm just happy I was able to find the GH and end it quickly. I hope everyone here does the same when hunting. Even tho I like hunting rabbits and squirrels I always feel a little remorse for the killing of a animal, but that goes away quickly with every bite

You know when you are in the woods at 2am following the timiest of a bloodtrail left by a whitetail shot before sunset by one of your group and you find it dead after having been through every draw and holler always going around the hills...but you find it...that you are with a good group of hunters because no one complains about the search, just the fact you HAVE to find the deer. And once found you see it had been shot very high on the gut and bled out slowly internally until it finally bled out enough it collapsed and when it fell, it popped its gut out. Not pretty...but if the search had been given up over the tiny drip trail he had left, he would have been wasted meat. If you shoot something...FIND IT and finish it off if its not already dead.
You did good finding it. Great example of finishing the job.

Good post, an should be read by all.
There are a lot of things I don't hunt anymore because I don't eat what ever it is.
The only difference are GH and rabbits that are causing me a problem in the garden or under the shed.....Then all bets are off.
I do believe in using the correct tool as well.....and I have heard all the "drop anything on the planet"...and "shot placement"......etc, mostly trying to convince them selves and I suppose others that what they are shooting is adequate....at least under ideal conditions.
Use enough gun folks....as I have also heard "I use FMJ so it perf's both sides, and bleeds more," so you only have to track it 100yds or so........Wrong answer.....animal should be DRT...or you do feel bad on a lost animal, and you should.
I have spent a lot of time tracking other peoples deer because the are shooting too small of a load, because "those big rifles kick!".
I take my dog to run down wounded ducks and geese that were questionable shots in the first place, just so they don't go to waste....and there are a lot of people I won't hunt with any more. ....Finish what you start.
