I am sure everyone here has read at least one book or comment on the Web regarding going full Rambo killing everything that moves in TEOTWAWKI scenario.
The normal response among survival sites is in fact the Rambo scenario; normalcy bias assures that. Beyond that, most folks think they have a way to survive, yet rarely can they get outside their personal reality to glimpse what such an existence would be like. The veneer of society is a thin one at best, removing it exposes both the worst of us, and the best of us.
The term society can mean a local community, county, state, country, military organization, etc. aka any group of people for a common purpose.
In military terms, support structures are part and parcel. Get shot or otherwise injured, your dusted off to the rear. Heavily attacked, fire support is called in, etc.
In civilian terms, attacked call the police, house on fire call the fire department, out of food seek the various shelters, etc.
Both sets utilize support structures.
Both also utilize tools, laws, and other force multipliers. Laws and tools as a force multiplier? A society uses laws to establish conditions and acceptable/unacceptable actions within itself. UCMJ for instance applies to the military society. Federal/state laws being the counter point among civilians. Both utilize threat of force/consequences to assure compliance.
Tools such as cars, medical gear, cranes, down to a screw driver multiply the force and ability of a standard human to perform task they otherwise could not. Anything that interrupts the use of, or supply of tools threatens that society, as does a break down of the relevant laws.
The concept of 'equality' is a social construct. Remove society from the equation and we have a decidedly unequal environment. Rather than an orderly functioning group/society, we have chaos and the resulting jungle rules.
No support, no force multipliers except those that you create or manage to hold onto, and most importantly, no support except that which you can arrange or make on your own. That is the point at which most break down mentally. Even within the various military organizations, it's an extremely unusual situation for someone to find themselves truly alone.
Even a bum living under a bridge has some support. They can at least go to a shelter, or rely on secondary form support from heat vents, garbage, etc. I would put the number of people who have experienced that in this country at less than 1% of the population, world wide maybe 5%.
That said, it's understandable why most can't comprehend it. They may well think they can, but I seriously doubt most realize the level of suckage a total collapse of society represents. People on the receiving end of human trafficking, outright enslavement, etc have a clue, as do people who have suffered the worst humanity(?) has to offer in places like ISIS strongholds, somolia, etc. Places where the value of a person is measured in terms normally applied to animals.
What does a human look like when their humanity is removed from the equation? An animal. There will be billions of animals let loose on the world in a total collapse. That is what awaits on the other side.
I did mention the best humanity had to offer as well. There are those that choose to die before giving sway to their animalistic side. The force of spirit being the difference between just another animal and a human.
Mental preparedness becomes paramount in light of that. Not only to take the horrors coming your way, but to prevent yourself from entering the animal kingdom.
