I have the opportunity to sign a winter-heating contract with my LPG supplier at $1.899/gallon. HOWEVER, because crude oil prices are currently coming down, the current price off the truck is $1.499/gallon.
Here are my questions for those who are wiser and more informed then I:
Do you see/sense/believe that crude oil prices will go up, down, or stay flat between now and mid-winter?
Do you see/sense/believe that LPG prices will go up, down, or stay flat between now and mid-winter?
What are current LPG prices where you live?
Are your LPG prices currently trending down, like mine are, for the moment?
THANKS!

wtrfwlr, I see nothing wrong with your links since it pertains to the topic or questions that tj is asking.

Dollar index going up will bring it down short term. Mid winter I expect it to be trending up if not precipitously so.

I'd have to check our LP price here. Every year we get the pre buy options on our heating oil. I have never taken them because the prices are already inflated over the current rate and it has never went up as high as they suggested so it would have been a waste of money.
However, depending on how the economy/ banks etc are looking I may pre buy just so the money is invested more or less. I suppose they could always just not deliver but it might be better to do that than risk not having access to it or having it de valued.

Seems like a good time to invest in storage capacity while prices are stable and availability is unlimited. I suppose it all depends upon how people perceive the future. That thought crossed my mind as well.. I have propane for heat and cooking.. I was thinking about buying another tank (bigger) and adding it to the system..

While it could be cheaper in the very short term, I'd say those prices will look very good in 6-8 months.
All tanks are topped off here and if I had much cash lying around I would buy another.

I've been also thinking about buying 3 more tanks to add to the ones I already have topped off

Thanks for the input, gang! I'd love to bury a 1,000 gallon tank out back (and fill it up), but I don't have the budget for that right now. That's why I'm trying to figure out the best LPG-financial move on planning for the upcoming winter.

A bit late but LP prices here trend up and down wih gasoline price. Around October first they trend more with heating oil prices of the northeast even though we are far from anyone even selling heating oil. Wher I in your position negotiating a contract down to the off the truck price would be.required. we lived off propane for several years and have seen the prices fluctuate nearly two bucks a gallon in a matter of weeks.

Up here in northern NH, I just pre-bought 1600 gallons heating oil for 3.19/9. I am in the process of getting the best propane prices I can for a pre buy. Right now the best I have been able to negotiate is 3.27. This is for the American Legion and the heating oil price was for a non-profit. Last year we had a mild winter and used 1500 gals heating oil and 300 gals propane. I, on the other hand, will probably be wintering over at my place in FL where I use neither heating oil nor propane, except in my camper. ;D Jim

Ours recently dropped to $1.28 I have a 250 gallon tank, but had another 500 given to me...just have to get it moved and hooked up. If I do a lock in price right now, I get it at $1.48. But the ONLY thing I use the LPG for is my furnace, and I rarely use it since wood heat is my primary heat source. As it stands right now, I seldom use more than a tank and a half all winter from the 250 tank. So if I add a 500 to it, and get them both filled at the same time, I will have fuel for 2 winters without conserving. So I am not sure if doing a contract would benifit me or not. My biggest issue is that when my neighbors get gas, the man automatically tops off my tank, whether I ask for it or not, and he leaves a bill on the door. Can't seem to break him of it either!

Dink, my tank has a place for a padlock.. GET ONE! Call his boss, call the Sherrif (trespass) and tell them you aren't paying for unauthorized deliveries. I will say this, if I have them top it off instead of waiting until it's down pretty low the cost per gallon is higher because of where they have to drive to.

Its a habit they got into with Jim. He had ti done for the last 4 years at this place...and my driveway circles around the back of my house and straight into the neighbors driveway. It was made that way for the folks who lived here originally. I don't mind...he is a nice enough guy, just a little "forgetful". And I have to save all summer and fall for the cost of a comeplete fill up at teh beginning of winter, Can't really afford the cost of suprise fill ups through the year.
Did you know that if LPG sets in a tank unused over a summer that the gas will "settle" to the bottom of the tank and at first when you start to use it, it will use up very slowly, then all of a sudden, it will use up really fast?! At least thats what has happened to us for the last 4 years! And as it sets, the pressure shows that it goes down but as soona s you start using it, the pressure goes up before it drops again. They came out and put new guages adn all that on the tank and said that was normal...but it sounds messed up to me!

Current price in 3.499 and I know last winter it fluctated up at least .25 cents. I figure with Middle East tensions it was still a good option. I don't think I will lose money on it. I'll have to see about the LPG.
