I checked last week about a 500 gallon tank to set behind my shop for emergency use for ?. Was $1.59 and eighty for the tank rent.

;D I am lucky...my tanks were given to me, along with new guages. And my first complete fill up this fall will be free. Gotta love friends that look out for you like that! Gives me a good head start anyways! ;D

VERY INTERESTING! I initiated this thread in June of 2012. Back then, a winter contract for LP could be had for $1.89/gal, and the off-the-truck price (at that moment) was $1.49/gal. This evening our Automotive Tech instructor came into my office right before I was going to head out the door. He was obviously upset and needed to talk to someone. I sat back down in my chair and let him unload his frustrations. He heats his home with Propane (LPG) and with this incredible cold snap we're having, he's going through about 20 gallons per day. He recently filled his 500 gallon tank for $3.59 per gallon. That was bad enough; but, he spoke with a neighbor this morning who said the local supplier just raised the price to $5.29/gallon, AND, they are rationing -- you can only buy 100 gallons per delivery! I, myself, filled my 500 gallon tank on December 31st for $2.35/gallon; but, I only use it for hot water and cooking. I'm good for the rest of the season! I really feel sorry for folks relying on LPG to keep from freezing in their homes. I am also totally grateful for my two, Vermont Castings wood burners and for the four cords of firewood out back! Preparedness/survival is sometimes best served by more primitive solutions; and, multiple options are a must! Are any of y'all getting hurt by the recent LPG issue? How are you coping? Here's one of many news stories: www.nytimes.com/2014/01/23/us/propane-amid-high-prices-and-bitter-cold.html?_r=0

Mid winter I expect it to be trending up if not precipitously so. It trended up alright and precipitously so. I'll be surprised if it doesn't go considerably higher than it is now before it's said and done.

In winter, HEAT is the only necessary external energy form we need to survive. When evaluating our ability to heat our homes/shelters, IMHO the key words are: simplicity, redundancy, reliability, and sustainability. Mother Nature and the powers-that-be have school in session right now. Those who don't learn from this real-time life lesson may find themselves in serious trouble when winter rolls around again, a year from now.

The propane companies I buy mine from around here always encourage me to fill my tank in June/July time frame as there is less demand for it. That's usually the lowest price of the year according to them. Kind of makes sense but I agree... The redundancy that TJ talks about is critical I think. In the new 'Camp David' I'm going to a wood burning stove with no fireplace.
