This seems doable but I don't have a clue about its effectiveness. Has anyone built/used anything like this? Or seen one someone has made? I'm curious about incorporating this into some structure in the future. www.thesietch.org/projects/solarthermalpanel2/

Nope but kudos to him for building his gadget with recycled materials.

Theory is mostly sound, though I'd advise against drinking anything that came out of such a coil. The part of the theory he got wrong was regarding IR. Fused silica glass (standard glass) loses all transmittance at about 2.5µm wavelength and up. Heat radiates IR. Therefore if it's heating up, it's not from IR passing through the glass. It is, from the secondary light heating in the visible spectrum. That matters more than is made apparent. In theory, a coil like that could get way hotter and build up dangerous pressures if it got blocked for any reason. The transverse of visible light spectrum energy into heat/IR energy means, that the IR energy cannot escape back through the glass. That contained energy is going somewhere once it reaches a temperature that exceeds its containment integrity pressure. That said, care must be taken not to contain too much.

Nope, not that one. Volume will be way low. Plus I would never consume water from that coil. It has contained a mixture of highly toxic chemicals. The refrigerant oil alone makes it a no go from the get go.
There are quite a few solar water heating systems you can build yourself. They won't be cheap, but they can be pretty efficient.
Keep looking IMHO.

Wasn't going to drink it and I agree it needs flushing before using for anything. Inexpensive is what I'm looking for. I think there are better resources available than some of the stuff he used. Low flow isn't a problem. I'm thinking back up not primary. So any hot water shower is good. Of course a gallon ziplock inside a black bag would work too for emergency purposes. Just kicking ideas around now instead of after and saying 'why didn't I look at that beforehand.'

I remember years ago "Stairman" had taken a collapsible gallon camping jug, hung it up, filled it way past its gallon capacity, (it looked like the size of those large exercise balls) and let it heat up in the sun for more than one hot shower or one very slow hot shower. I asked him what it was because I couldn't figure it out. Yes, I like planning ahead like you and do own rubber, collapsible gallon water containers. It won't heat up on cloudy days or during cold winter days but I'm geared to take cat baths on those days.

though I'd advise against drinking anything that came out of such a coil. I remember an episode of "Survivorman" where he was stranded on a beach. He scavenged the beach for items to distill salt water to fresh drinking water. One of the items he found was a length of copper tubing. Now, from your and Missasip's statements, apparently he was taking a huge chance drinking the water which steamed up in the tubing to make it potable. Right or wrong?

Would they be useable?

Okay after rethinking this, the copper tubing from the fridge ice-making machine has to be safe cause water is passing through it to make ice cubes. Right?

And the copper tubing connection from the space heater has vapored gas and gas treating chemicals passing through it time and again, which over time leaves a buildup of chemicals on the inside of the piping so therefore it more than likely isn't safe to use. Right? This to me is very important info I don't recall us touching base on. Thanks TW for your thread which has led to some facts I hadn't really thought about but it could make a huge difference for survival.

Right? Correct. If it were 'the' only way, and 'if' it was try or die anyway would be the only circumstances I'd try that under.
