I have used plastic 2 liter bottles the same way for years now.... cut the top off flip over lace back on with a bit of fishing line - set with bottle top point up stream and slightly more then half under water then use some natural materials to build a simple funnel to the bottle and usually in a few hours you will have some minnows in the bottle since they swim on the surface and will follow natural contours right into the bottle. Make sure you punch a number of holes in the bottom to allow flow through the bottle.
