[quote author=wtrfwlr board=critters thread=1336 post=15341 time=1341422266 I know it may seem strange to be an avid hunter and still be so enthused about the critters but I just love my little urban wildlife preserve.[/quote] It isn't strange at all. Any hunter worth his salt is a naturalist at heart. They should be more connected to the natural world than any PETA hippie out there.
When I am in the woods I marvel at the plants and creatures I see, smell and hear. They are interconnected in ways we can only begin to imagine. inteligence and wonder hold it all together. When the deer outsmarts me (9 times out of 10) I smile and confess he deserved to get away. When I outsmart him, I give him the respect of a word of thanks for the good hunt. I know that his death means life for me and for another deer in the herd, who might otherwise die of disease or starvation.
I am trying to teach my son that his papa only kills what he is going to eat or is going to eat him (read mosquitos:)), and if he kills for any other purpose he had better have a good reason.
I understand there are hunters out there who kill for the fun of it and have no respect for their quarry. They shoot squirrels and birds and leave them to rot. When the deer outsmarts them they cuss and are angry. I don't understand these folks. I hunt because I love what I am hunting, and everything else I happen to encounter. (OK, I could do without mosquitoes, deerflies, black flies and the like, but I understand their place in the whole picture.)
So no, it doesn't seem strange to me

Well said Mark. Not everyone 'gets' that. I happen to get it and it is obvious you do as well. Good job on passing the lesson along to our next generation of hunters.

Mark and Duckie, I am glad to hear that there are more ethical hunters out there. I also have instilled the same principals into my kids and they understand and feel the same way so thank you for maintaining and duckie thank for sharing. Hope the cardinal will be fine
