I've kept and eye on my Wren nest and Lo and Behold one of the chicks hatched this morning! It is super tiny and tried to get a good photo of it but she has the nest down filled really well and I didn't want to cause too much disturbance. I will wait until later and try again to get a better image maybe after the second chick hatches. You can barely make out the tiny head in the ones I took. I was also surprised to learn that a pair of Cardinals have not only built a nest but laid eggs and have a chick there as well! It wasn't there last time I checked which was not all that long ago. I had the same problem in this nest with the Cowbird but it was much harder to tell which was which? There was one chick and 4 other eggs in the nest. Two were slightly larger and looked more brown with the other two having a tint of blue and all four had brown speckles. I went ahead and removed the two larger eggs and hope that is right. I compared them to the previous Cowbird egg I evicted and they are a very close match. I do wonder about the chick that has already hatched though? There is no shell in the nest or on the ground so I can't tell if it is a Cardinal or not. I think this chick hatched this morning too. It is really tiny. This nest is just off the porch in a large free standing RoseBush so it was much easier to get some good shots off of a step ladder. The Wren nest and Chick. The Cardinal nest and Chick The larger egg is in this shot that I think is the Cowbird orphan. This is a shot of the two eggs I left. Hope I guessed right!

I think it is. I am amazed by all of it, whether it is the grandest Bull Elk or Moose or the tiniest of baby birds like I have here on my porch or in my yard.

It be funny if you threw out the wrong eggs OH NO!! That would not be at all funny Not one bit. That is why after knowing exactly what I was doing I went ahead and did another hours research about the problem including the Cornell University of Orinthology. I think my egg culling was the proper thing. I like Cardinals and Wrens, Cowbirds......not so much! A bird that can't even build a nest for itself sends me a message about its worth as a productive member of the Avian society. Read any human correlation you would like into those comments

Great pics of your new found extended family. I have a little feathered friend who decided to build her nest on my back porch too. She picked a flower pot sitting on the railing with a spider plant in it. Her four eggs hatched a week ago and the babies are so cute.
She's a Goldfinch and I'm surprised she chose to build her nest so low and in a well-traveled area which is near my backdoor. It's fun watching that busy little mom going back and forth seeking out bugs to feed them. For the mom I put birdseed nearby to keep up her strength in between flights seeking food for her babes.

I just came back in from checking on both of the nests to see if there were new chicks, there weren't. Both Moms were sitting and the Daddy's are really good at loudly scolding me for disrupting the family! As soon as we get new chix I'll post new Pix I'm concerned about my little toad buddy. I haven't seen him around in a few days? I don't know if he has buried down in the pot because of the heat or if he just bailed to find new diggs? I've even been checkin at night and he hasn't been out catchin bugs so I fear he's moved on. But maybe not? He might be over at some girltoads house

Try not to bother the birdies to much...or they won't come back next year. Got to a big pet store and get some small wax worms or red worms and such and put a litttle dish of thm out for your birdies...or get a bag of seen and set out a feeder and a birdbath...they will really appreciate it if they don't have to hunt all over in this heat for food and water.

Got the food and water covered. This is the front yard, several feeders and two baths that are filled throughout the day as well as the mini pond with waterfall that is there in the corner straight behind the feeders on the Shepards hook. For the first time ever I have seen Squirrels and Birds at the water both at the same time! Also plenty of worms and bugs since I use NO types of chemicals. A much better photo of the Wren chick. And the Cardinal chick is still alone.

Great pics!! I like the feeders and waterers...should have kinown you would already have them out! Thanks for thinking of the wildlife!! I know it may seem strange to be an avid hunter and still be so enthused about the critters but I just love my little urban wildlife preserve. I used to keep a pretty good list with all the birds and animals that I have or have spotted in my yard which is right in the middle of town (that is what is neat!) I have lots of rabbits and squirrels that live here year round but I also have, Possums Coons Skunks One Red Fox family Rats Mice Nutria (from the river) One very lost Coyote! Moles Gophers Many many different birds that I have documented but am not gonna type all of them out right now! But some that are notable are Red Shouldered Hawk Barred Owl Barn Owl Nesting Mississippi Kites Collered Doves ( aka Turtle Doves) Perrigren Falcon And of course my wonderful Hummingbirds
