All three barred rocks laid their first egg today. Yeah! They are officially adults and I will move them in with the older girls.
I was starting to think they would wait until spring to start laying.
They have not been with a rooster yet, since our rooster is a Cochin/cross he is a big and sometimes mean guy and I wanted to make sure the chicks/hens were adults before they went in with him.
Now I should get 10 eggs a day until I butcher the 7 older girls. But not til next spring after I hatch out a batch of chicks from these new hens.
and I will once again practice my tried and proven method of only hatching rounded small end eggs (as opposed to pointed small end) and getting all pullets. Or mostly pullets but it will be my error not the eggs.
works with quail too, which is where I learned the trick.
I don't know if I told it but non of the 40 eggs laid by the Guineas before they were killed off hatched. Don't know if the reason was their first nesting or the eggs got cold/wet or what, just know non hatched.
