I was out looking at the Swannanoa River a couple of days ago, after a 2" midnight downpour. As expected it was up, and moving at quite a clip. Usually it's just a slow "hey don't hurry me" pace down to the French Broad.
But it was muddy, very muddy. And I started thinking.....it would be easy enough to boil it for sterility purposes, but what would be the best initial filtering method to get rid of most of the sand/dirt/other particulates? Your thoughts?

I'd have to use a bandana or a t-shirt or maybe even pantyhose first. I think that would catch a lot of debris, then I'd push it through my Katadyn or Berkey Water Filters.. If I had any more doubts I'd boil it or bleach it..

I would think that a bucket of sand/charcoal/sand with holes in the bottom to drain into another container would get most of the ickies out before final sterilizing. Maybe a pair of pantyhose or other perforous netting like material stretched over the top of the bucket would get the big bugs and leaves out.
