My favorite ways of cooking in the wilderness are large open fires and Dakota Fire Holes. However, if for some reason I'm not able to use these I carry in my backpack the Sterno Flat Folding Stove. If I run out of Sterno I can use small branches or short, chopped pieces of wood to build a fire in the stove to cook on. The wind gets blocked on all four sides to keep a hot fire going. In a short time I can boil water, use it to make coffee, add to instant meals, etc. Once used in this way I can wrap it up to keep soot off other items in my bag. Do you have a backup method of cooking?

Dakota Fire is always my go whenever possible, for back ups I have a collapsible stick burning stove, and small alcohol stove that I can burn 90% rubbing alcohol or denatured alcohol. Here's another out of the box stove I've used, I take a spam can and fill half full of play sand, I pour unleaded gasoline into the sand and mix it in maintains the sand consistency , burns hot cooks well works in a pinch
