This is sure to bring back a memory or two for Thywar and The Naked Okie - this week Im training for my PR 24 qual. This is just operator level for now. This fall I do the Training for Trainers course. It's a great system if not a bit complex at times. This is a course I have wanted for a good long while and lovin every minute of it!

You talking about the baton? www.safariland.com/products/less-lethal/batons/expandable-batons/pr-24-and-control-device-batons/pr-24-expandable-side-handle-black-anondized-baton-PR24Expand.htmlWow! I remember training with it at the Orange County Sheriffs Department(CA)in 1973 as an MP I think they were the first US police force to use it and we were the first DOD unit to test it out. (Presidential Security Detachment) It definitely was an advantage over the older baton. I thought by now everyone would be using the expandable batons. Oh! I see the model listed is an expandable, ours were not. www.thehomesecuritysuperstore.com/self-defense-personal-defense-weapons-batons-expandable-solid-steel-baton-26-inch-26t-p=2787You use that thing with some basic boxing moves and an understanding of pressure points and it makes an excellent tool. We used to have to be registered just to carry it and it was considered a deadly weapon. My first night as a civilian police officer I had my night stick and my mace and the SGT (a big guy and a wrestling champion) told me I was just going to get it taken from me a beat with it., I told him to try and take it. He tried 3 times and ended on the floor all 3 before he said OK, you can carry it. Good luck with the training. Watch out with any neck strikes. No back of neck or throat strikes, stick to Carotid Artery strikes. I broke a guys larynx once with a simple jab with the short end. If he had not been pointing a gun at the time I would have been screwed. Of course I had a reputation as a night stick user. I would tell them once, then my nightstick would tell them. I had 8 charges of brutality in three years, but 0 convictions.

Carried one when I was a rookie some. After my first year I just carried a mag light with five C cell batteries. Worked very well. Once it worked so well the booking sgt made me take him to the ER For stitches. His dad was POd. At his son.

Wrapped up my two day course yesterday. I just learned the basics and really like it. Anything around the neck and head are "red" areas and are not to be used unless lower levels and techniques are not available or attempted and deemed ineffective. Just FYI- most all street officers carry the expandables now. I do on my duty belt at CG and have one in my car. These side handle batons are for riot control these days. Unfortunately, Safariland who bought out Monadnock, took out several of the moves (Georgia State Takedown, wrist drags and a couple others) to trim down training time. Supposedly that was to make their system more marketable against the Asp system. That means independent practice on my part and bugging my Senior instructors.

maglite works well as an offensive tool but only allows a few moves defensibly
the handle type baton will protect your head from a 2x4, chair, etc and allow immediate offensive follow-up
unfortunately, these days an officer is more likely to face a gun than a 2x4 and a baton shouldn't be the first thing drawn
I was chewed out by my Capt many times for using a nightstick or my hands against a weapon, but to me it depended on the distance we were apart
take time to draw a gun at 8" and you are going to get shot/stabbed, even if you shoot the other guy
to me at close range neutralizing the weapon being used is/was my primary concern. You might get your finger shot off but that's better than a round in the belly/head
More than a foot away it would be/was a different story.
In the past I approached a dicey situation with my baton out, these days if I have to approach one it will be with my weapon out and cocked
