See ifin yall can get county maps a yer areas a interest. I got a full set cause they list lots more thins then a state map do. Ya find all the old cemetaries an such what just don't on other maps. I've found old town ships what been gone fer many a year with the map an a gps unit. Fun ta go ta old post offices what ain't there no more. Ifin I had a metal detector, it'd be even more fun. You're right about the area maps of your area, much more detailed and great advice. Hope you get a metal detector soon.

I would never trust a GPS alone. EVER. Agreed! USGS 15 minute quad is my map of choice.

I'm in the process of acquiring the 8 USGS quads around my immediate area.
Took an outdoor survival class last Fall (actually, it started almost exactly 1 year ago) and GPS was expressly prohibited. That was a fun class.
I use a GPS on my phone only for when I am driving and it's for physical address searches only. On foot I use 100% map and compass.
The main draw of maps (he he....pun intended) is that the BATTERIES can't die, and you cannot lose the signal.
Oh....and I learned in my map and compass class that 10% of adults when asked to point North, will actually point straight up at the ceiling/sky!!!! Now that is friggin' pathetic!

So glad you made this thread Cajunlady. I have to agree that I use a map to verify my travels. I might use google maps to direct me to a destitnation bur I always print the map to go with it and compare it to my state map or local map just to see how accurate they are.
Remember you should roll the maps not fold them as they will get creases and can sometimes tear. I am speaking of large state maps etc. Of course county maps are that large also so If you want a map that shows just a specfic sectionjust go to the USGS and make them to be be sent to you.
