I heard this announced on the news a few days ago and thought it was worth mentioning. GPS' are endangering paper maps. Due to their increased usage, companies who produce paper maps are scaling back by as much as half the quantity they usually print. You may want to think twice before tossing out those you already have. Even if they're old they could prove useful. www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2012/07/gps_endangers_paper_maps.html

And always stop at the 'welcome' sites as you enter a state and pick up a state map.. more detailed than an atlas.

That is too bad. Looking at a state or regional map really helps you to orient yourself. From my years at AAA I could still get to just about any major city because the freeway system is imprinted on my brain from all the map work I did. People have become dependant on that technology too. After a while no one will be able to do anything without a computer telling them how to do it.

You're right cowgirl, being able to read a map will be another dieing skill taken over by modern gadgets.

Some time in the future this information may not be available to all people.Makes us easier to control if you have no idea where you are or where to go. I would never rely on a GPS.

Makes me wonder about all the talk of people leaving the cities and wandering out to the country if thing got bad. In a few years no one will have a clue which way to go.

There are people who don't even know the cardinal directions in their own cities. Many can't tell you how to get out of town unless it's on a major thoroughfare.

GPS's can be great...for now BUT, what if we lost our satalite signal. You better have and be able to read a "real" map. Even though we have GPS, we still keep maps in our cars and BOB's.

Allota folk couldn't read a map anywho. I use GPS, but I sure don't rely on it.
We use lots a maps fer disasters an search an rescue, ya can't get the info offin that tv screen like ya can a map.
I've got tubes a maps, from city, county an state maps what we use when were out. Gives ya lots more information then a GPS can.
There be so many kinds a maps. If ya like em, search online an ya be amazed at the variety ya can get.
A good map an compass will get ya places yer GPS don't even know bout.

I would never trust a GPS alone. EVER. Exactly. I still have my backroad mapbooks, they are 20 years old but I bet still 80+ % accurate. I have 4 or 5 of them, they run by regions and those that I have covers most of the province I live in. Considering getting a good topo of the area I live in though, I didnt grow up here so I never learned the backroads like I did where I was a kid.

One day while shopping at an estate sale I came upon a box filled with sewing notions and quite a few maps. This couple did some extensive traveling and held on to their maps. They are quite old and I was tempted to pass them on to someone who wanted to plaster her wall with them.
When I joined the other forum I got to thinking just maybe those maps could lead me to older locations of areas no longer on maps. It may be old roads no longer used, maybe parts of a town no longer used, or even where some plantation homes once stood. You never know, those old maps may lead me to an ideal BOL. ;D

See ifin yall can get county maps a yer areas a interest. I got a full set cause they list lots more thins then a state map do. Ya find all the old cemetaries an such what just don't on other maps.
I've found old town ships what been gone fer many a year with the map an a gps unit. Fun ta go ta old post offices what ain't there no more.
Ifin I had a metal detector, it'd be even more fun.
