I've put cinnamon, oatmeal, nutmeg, and walnuts in my chocolate chip cookies for years. Sometimes I omit the nuts or the oatmeal, but the basic cookie part of the chocolate chip cookies always needed far less butter/shortening than the formula on the back of the bag of chips demanded. My cookies come out soft and stay that way. If I want them more crisp, I'll add more butter, but our family likes them soft.
