Lifestaw is good. I have a few. I listened to some idiot on the radio admonishing people for worrying about all of the stores being out of bottled water (I do too, but for a different reason). He said since there will be flooding all you need to do is walk outside and drink.
I was screaming at the radio. The radio host did not admonish or correct him. I'm sure he is just as clueless.
Lifestraw will not turn salt water fresh or filter out chemicals. Freaking idiots.
I was in several stores yesterday (restroom breaks while working) and can't tell you the number of people I calmed down by saying......Use whatever containers you have, or buy a few - even 5 gallon buckets (new not used) and use your tap water. You could see the light bulbs go on.

Sometimes I think we shouldn't give some people warnings. I think we should just let them cull themselves.

Sometimes I think we shouldn't give some people warnings. I think we should just let them cull themselves. There is wisdom in those words. You may have just explained why our society seems to lack basic common sense: We are not allowing Mother nature to follow her natural course. Around here, that self-culling generally starts with: "Here, hold my beer and watch this y'all."

Simple distillation of the salt water combined afterwards with the life straw should net safe drinking water. m.wikihow.com/Turn-Salt-Water-Into-Drinking-WaterI don't think the link emphasized the heat control enough, but otherwise it's good info.

I've used a similar method in the past just to see how it worked. It can be rather fuel intensive to garner water in any quantity. Another bonus is you are left with some great sea salt.

Seen a young couple out hiking the Ohio And Erie Canal Towpath trail, So I asked them where they started the hike and where they are ending the hike. As we were talking I noticed the gear they had and seen no water bottles so I asked them about drinking water. They had a lifestraw and drinking right out of the Tuscarawas river, this river has several water treatment plants that dump the treated sewage into the river. Not only that but many factories also use the river water, not sure I'd feel safe using the lifestraw in any major river system. On the day I seen this couple the river had a slick on top and had a nasty smell, I did warn them but they just kept on drinking without a worry. Even with a filtration system I'd be very picky as to the source of my drinking water...if possible.

You can never have enough of these to spread around in all packed gear. Taking advantage of the drop in price is a smart move.

We went with sawyer minis. They're a bit smaller and we liked how it screwed onto the threads of water bottle.
For that price though Lifestraws are hard to beat.
We're also looking into the Versa flow light weight filters. They seem to be just like the sawyers, except they'er threaded on both sides. You can designate a clean and a dirty bottle, screw them both on and filter one bottle into the other. Not the you couldn't do that with the sawyers, but the threads would make life easier and they're about the same price.
