I've had success using a bow & drill to start a fire, and with flint & steel. Like most people I've seen do this, however, it has always been with a prepared kit. I'm wondering just how successful I would be if I found myself in a situation where I wasn't carrying my "special equipment" and had to start a fire. After all, If I'm going to carry a pre-made bow/drill with prepared board, or my bag of flint & forged steel striker, why not just carry lighters, matches, etc.? So, I guess I'm going to have to give it a try, where the only things I can use are what I find around me. I wonder how many of us who think we could do this because we've done it with our perfect materials, could do it with just a shoestring from the shoes we are wearing and what we can find in the local woods. Has anyone else really tested your abilities? How did you or how do you think you will do?

Given the circumstances aren't in your favor you will fail. Ask Les Stroud.

At times even with a kit, fire is never a sure thing, even a bic lighter doesn't guarantee a nice cozy campfire. It all comes down to knowledge and skills we acquire along the way. If you don't have shoestrings for whatever reason...no problem if you have the skills for making your own natural cordage. Don't have a knife for making a bowwdrill kit in the field...no problem if you have the skills for making stone or bone tools. Skills and knowledge is whats needed if you need to do less modern but more primitive bushcraft.
