In the Marine Corps we have five belts in our martial arts program: Tan, Gray, Green, Brown, and Black. All recruits who graduate boot camp do so at the tan level. Something I learned at my last station was that what we learn at tan is what the original WWII Marine Raiders learned. Ultimately it's still very basic. I was a tan belt for almost ten years before I finally moved to gray in 2016. This morning I earned my Green belt. I definitely like this one the best not just because I just earned it, but it's also the closest to martial art styles that I've studied in Okinawa. I think this had a bit to do with the level of confidence I showed while testing for the belt (something the instructor took note of) since the moves were familiar in a way the previous belt levels weren't. Career-wise moving up to this belt makes me slightly more competitive for promotion selection, but moving up too quickly can backfire on me such that I no longer have "room to grow" in my employee reviews in which case the martial art belt levels can play into.
