Well, I did it, I submitted my retirement paperwork and am going to retire in the next couple of months. I am ready, my wife is ready and I am looking forward to it. It has been a long and at times hard road. I would do it again in a heatbeat. Looking forward to being home.

Good deal. Enjoy your retirement until you get bored then find something to do to keep you young.

Probably need an RG pistol to keep things exciting. Note; while not required, an armor plated gauntlet may be required to fire it in the event of too much excitement from it.

I have only a few years to go myself. I'm eligible on October 1, 2020 for full pension but, it's to my benefit to stay for awhile longer. Even then my son will only be 14 soooo, I'll really just be working somwhere else while drawing a pension. Thing is, I really enjoy my work. It's gonna be hard to leave it.

Going on 11 years retirement and having a ball. Like Thywar says, find a bunch of stuff to do. Some can handle retirement and others have difficulty with it. Just know that going in. Our dreams and plans don't always satisfy or jive with reality.

The civilian side would favor your background in government jobs. Especially the civilian side of govern services rendered to the Coast Guard and likely the Navy. You will have the chance to be around your son at a critical time in his life, without worry of being deployed. You will have a minimum level of financial security to fall back on. From personal experience I can tell you the longer you're exposed to risk, the higher the probability that risk will bite you. The political environment will be toxic and only get worse by 2020. I would not be surprised in the least if politicians begin rewriting the rules for all branches of the military when it comes to retirement. Take a long hard look at what Clinton and his 'peace dividends' did to the military for his years in office. The echoes of that past are already painting frames for the future. You do not want to find yourself on the front side of a re-enlistment when they spring a rules change on retiring. Never forget Murphy is a real asshat.

Could consider finding someplace like this .... combatshootingandtactics.com/instructors.htmto work after retirement or even consider starting your own...
