Earlier this week we heard about the power outages in South America (argentina, etc). My sister in law called my wife and she was ready to go into full survival mode. She can see everyone in South America heading up here. She is going to clean out the basement and start stockpiling.
In truth, they are already very far along. In the country, large garden, fruit trees, tractor, they freeze a lot of stuff, have a well they can use a well bucket in, etc. I think the main issue is depending on electricity and freezer ( and gas). I think she wants to investigate dehydrating.

IMHO dehydrating is the best of all methods for food preservation. You can do it without any technical equipment or power (except for the sun LOL) and the finished product doesn't need any power to preserve it. Good for her. Worst of all is freezing because that's usually where the most expensive food is stored, the meat, and in a big emergency the electricity is probably going out.

The first thing she needs to do is get educated. Too many people watch a few youtube videos, panic, then throw money at the problem.
Once educated, then comes detailed planning.
Then comes execution of the plan.
Then comes review in the form of drills/stress test.
Finally there is refinement.
1. Education 2. Planning 3. Execution 4. Drills 5. Refinement
1. Health 2. Security 3. Shelter 4. Food 5. Water
Most things prepping/survival can be broken down by list of fives. That makes it easy to focus where it counts.

Your sister-in-law is realizing the one most important piece of the world puzzle. That is, if we don't do anything to help ourselves, no one else will. Good for her, I know having her onboard is a big asset and you will do everything to help her along.
