I have seen several videos showing people how to make fish/frog gigs but they all have an inherrent flaw. Once you break a barb you have to cut down the shaft to make new barbs or craft an entirely new gig. I make my gigs with replaceable barbs. It's really easy and saves you excess work later on. Here's a pic. I'll describe the process below. First you make a gig shaft as normal. Get your shaft, cut a cross section in the end then tie your cordage around the base so it does not further split on you. Instead of carving the barbs out of the quartered peices of the shaft, fashion 4 barbs out of smaller twigs (or wire if you have it). Cut a wedge in the bottom of each barb and shove it between the quartered parts of the shaft. Shove 2 smaller sticks crosswise to spread the barbs then tie more cordage around them to keep the barbs in place. If a barb breaks you can simply carve a new one and replace it. This sure beats cutting down the shaft or fashioning a new gig altogether.

Thanks all. It also helps to have a few extra replacement barbs carved in advance to make repair time minimal.

Nicely done and great food for thought PW. I've never been gigging but I hear it's fun. I do own an antique metal gig attached to an aluminum pole. Of course if caught without a gig, having the knowledge to make one from scratch in the wild is a big plus. Thanks for posting and sharing with us.

Don't forget the ear plugs once you gig a frog it can scream bloody murder for real

That should be a very useful gig to snag something to eat. Great job!
