You Can Never Have Too Much Of This If there’s any one thing I see missing in most people’s stockpile, more than anything else, it’s salt. I’m not talking about having a couple of those 26 oz. round containers of salt, I’m talking about hundreds of pounds of it. If you’re ever in a long-term survival situation, you’re going to need lots of it. Salt is used in almost every form of food preservation, from canning, to smoking, to dehydrating. So if you’re planning on growing or hunting your own food in a post-disaster world, you’re going to need a lot of salt. How much salt do you need to smoke an entire steer? How much to make salt fish? Unless you have a salt mine or salt lick available to you, you’re probably going to be in trouble. I’m fortunate, in that I live on the coast. So I can always extract salt from the ocean by allowing salt water to evaporate. But that’s a lengthy process. So, while I’m planning on using it, I’ve still got a couple of hundred pounds of salt stashed away in five gallon buckets. www.askaprepper.com/the-most-important-thing-that-is-missing-from-your-stockpile/?utm_source=Newsletter&utm_medium=AAPI don't have a couple of hundred pounds of salt stored but I do have 10 5 gallon buckets, or 50#, years ago I would have done more with it and therefore kept more, but not now. If your more into a survival situation, I agree the more you can have stored the better. The issue for a long time was keeping it dry, bagging it with rice or desiccants, any number of things. Then one day I was changing out the rice in the salt shaker when the clumped-up salt crumbled into fine grains again. NOTE: A five gallon clump of salt is salt.

Thanks for the reminder Woodyz. Hope you are doing well. I had purchased a lot of salt when I first joined this forum (2012, i think). I just had to purchase some more, been using it. I did notice that the salt had an expiration date of 2025. Boy that is too stupid (unless they are talking about the iodine).
I also recall from previous posts that we need NON iodized salt for preserving.
