Once again ammo is gone from most places. Anyone who does have it and isn't a big chain store is again gouging the price. Never have I seen an actual retailer sell a barrel of 5.56 (14,000 rounds or so) for a dollar a round. I stuck to my principles then and I'm sticking to them now. If I don't like the price I ain't buying.

This is why we plan ahead, but I do not buy 14,000 rounds at a time. For many years I have simply followed the approach of "shoot one, buy two or three." Folks are often amazed at how quickly that stacks it up when you shoot a lot. Over the span of three or four years, you accumulate thousands of rounds. It also seems less painful to buy a few boxes at a time spread out over the calendar.
Yes, I have reduced my recreational shooting a bit because I also refuse to pay scalpers rates - but I do put in some range time every week. One good thing about this shortage: I have been really enjoying shooting .22lr way out to 200 and 300 yards - and I do not feel guilty shooting it.
FWIW: I do not expect all ammo prices to return to the pricing that we saw last year. Expect roughly a 30%-50% increase, even after the inventory is back.

I picked up an .17 HMR ac-cu-trigger A17 and dropped a Vortex 4x12 on top off it a couple of years ago when .22 got so hard to come by... The .17 HMR CCI was easy to get still and I bought several rounds... It has become my go to varmint getter! Super accurate out to 250 yards and can easily be stretched to 300 yards.
Cross winds are killer on it though... I have killed smaller hogs (under 100 lbs) and yotes with it... Shot placement shot placement shot placement is all I can say..
It destroys smaller game though... If you body shoot a squirrel you wont get much meat!

Well, I don't use words like "accurate" when talking about .22lr out past about 125 yds!
It's more like "I can kind of mostly hit the target" - this a on a windless day at 300. These were CCI Mini-Mag 40gr round nose. It took me about 15 rounds just to get on the steel. Now I know where to hold. Like I said, this is not for hunting, but it is some cheap fun.

Lake City Army Ammunition Plant Federal American Eagle 5.56mm M193 NATO less then 1/2 that price.
I don't shoot 5.56 or .223 enough to buy 1400 rounds. I might shoot 9MM or .22LR enough to buy 1400 at a time and I bought 3000 7.62 x 39, but that was a every once in a while deal for me. I have not bought that many of anything but .22 since I was re-loading and I gave my re-loading stuff to my Grandson a couple of years ago because I had not used it it a long time.

I think if I was to buy 1400 rounds of anything in this day and age, the goberment would visit me and want to know where it was. I think the shoot one buy two option works well right now, even when trump was in and you could buy more freely, I expect the goberment would go back through the records and "see" what you bought.
If they want to dig through my backstops and count the number of rounds they find, I guess they could.
I don't shoot nearly as often, nor as much as I used to, and it would show if I had to shoot right now. I can still hit a 9" pie pan with a handgun, but if push comes to shove I'll use a shotgun these days.

For the last several years, all ammo purchases were/are with cash 2-3 boxes at a time. I own own only two guns that went through an FFA and that was 10 years ago. The rest were private party transactions with no ID's exchanged.
Of course nowadays I don't need many guns so I have records of selling most of them to private parties. I have a bill of sale for each, with the buyers first and last name. Then I have my signature notarized,, so it is dated. It am not legally required to verify the buyers identity or background, I simply put down the name that they gave me. No tragic boating accidents to explain.
