Not today, but last Thursday had an interesting encounter. Heard a ruckus happening on the ridge above my cabin maybe 100 yrs away while standing on the front porch drinking my morning coffee. After watching several moose crash through the brush in multiple directions followed by a bear roaring I grabbed the rifle and went to investigate. It appears a brown bear took a moose calf for breakfast. The cow moose came back looking for her calf. I could here her return behind be while I looking for the bear.
A bear somewhere in front of me and a emotional moose you can bet I had my rifle chambered. Did I mention the thick brush limits visability to maybe 50 to 100 feet? Sure enough she steps out of the brush 100 feet away turns her body, drops her head and runs full speed right at me. I shouldered the rifle looked through the 3-9 scope, set at 3 power, saw nothing but fur and pulled the trigger.
The moose was 20 feet from me when 375 ruger sent a 270 grain tsx slightly left or center through her chest. She did a 180 went about 100 feet and fell over dead.
Called Alaska state troopers/fish and game to report The DLP killing...They must have been busy...because they asked me to bring in the meat..lol...So spent the next few hours processing her and hauling out the meat.
It's unfortunate the cow moose lost her calf...then her own life that morning. Sometimes things happen quick and there's no time to think....just react... I'm fortunate to have been able to draw from years of hunting and hundreds...probably thousands of rounds fired from bolt guns at targets, deer, rabbit, coyote etc. And while a 30-06 would have likely done the job I don't regret holding a 375 in my hands that morning....Its why I originally built that rifle while living back in AZ...

To post pictures you will have to use a third party photo hosting site since we are at our limit for posting pictures directly to the site. I use Imgur and like it. It is free and pretty easy to use.

Glad you are OK and the outcome was so fortunate for you. Do you get to keep the meat or did you mean you had to take it into the police?

Thanks SolarGeek. Lol I called it in to state troopers as a DLP.Defense of Life and property....So the meat goes to the food shelter...But at least it's not going to waste. Been watching the bald eagles feed on the remains and now the ravens. Guess I'm helping keep them fed as well 😆.
