My approach to preparedness is changing. My doc tells me that I am healthy, but 70 years is just a couple of months away. Yes I have good places to go (on different cardinal headings) if I really, really have to escape, but my inclination to hunker down and dig in, grows with each passing year. While we are not remote (1-1/2 hours from Dallas) we are in a low population density area on a 33,000 acre lake, surrounded by ranches and farms - real people. Maintaining solid relationships for mutual aid is the name of the game. One of the big advantages is being able to store your stuff in multiple safe locations.
Now, more than any other time in my life, I feel that bad things are headed our way - hard and fast. I could never be as prepped as I would like, but this is a good time to double check and top off as needed.
Just like everything else, ammo is still expensive but it is available now but won't be at first sign of panic. I still run our small battery business but I have reduced it to online sales and very little inventory. I do enjoy throwing lead down range. I'll never be a great shooter, but my ten round groups are tightening up at 500 yards. My rifles must be getting old because they all wear glasses now!
Hoping everyone is well!
Marc

Just put 77 years downwind. Agree, really no viable options now except hunker down. This is where I will die.

With enough money we would have a more remote place set up. But that currently isn't an option. We're in a smallish town where people are spread out. Our place sits in a valley so not as defendable as we'd like.
I read one guys opinion that depending on the situation, people may head into cities because that's where any government aid would be handed out. That works fine for us if it plays out that way.

As my years go by I find the ways I set things up are different compared to the early to mid 2010s. With having to move every few years the prospect of hunkering down is a limited option, but...
That doesn't mean I can't teach the kiddos how to do things that'll set them up. Biggie there being how to think. An appreciation for where their food comes from another.

Same here, CG. I would like to be further out. I do not pretend to be prepared for a truly apocalyptic event. The best that I can hope for is to ride out a series of storms where food, supplies, and law and order are gone and we are on our own for some period of time.
I suspect that guy is right, people will head into town when they hear about handouts. But it may be like a wave that crashes ashore then flows back out. After seeing Covid and the fear associated with it sweep the nation, I want the ability to be isolated for a good amount of time. That would not work for the long haul, but at least until some of the dust settles. When I moved here to East Texas, I learned to respect and understand the local country boy rednecks. If they like you, there is nobody better to cover your back. Help them out when needed and they return the favor always.

Being 71 my own self, I decided years ago my plan needed to be BUG-IN, so I use what is oldest in my freezer, but replace it every month, I keep 10 cans each of what I like and replace what I eat every month, I keep 10 gallons of dry food that I will eat and maintain them, I drive a 10 year old truck that is in good shape, I live on 5 wooded {"hardened" acres, surrounded by a National Forest on 2 sides. I have 30 gallons propane .22/9mm/.308/20ga w stores of ammo for each. I keep a go bag and have a food/shelter/water cache in a defensible but under-used area, the forest service maintains firebreaks and power lines that make excellent shooting lanes. I maintain a local area map that shows sources of food water and meds. I have food water and supply caches in junked cars and graveyards around the area.I have no illusions, but I have done what I can for my wife and I to bug-in for about 90 days, but due to my diabetes, I can't do longer

Just turned 68 (happy to be alive!) and DH will be 67 in 2 weeks. Healthy, bad knee but no pain just limitations on what I cannot do (kneeling ever! and avoid falling on it, go down steep hills - so no going up unless there is a ski lift down). On Cpap but would live without it.
We have plenty of wooded land and a house designed for passive solar. Lots of other self sufficient additions, don't want to bore you all with what we did as it is on here in many threads. Garden is now larger; working great. Orchard, good, but nature has been unkind with this year drought, alast year tornadic winds blew off ALL blossoms and 2 years ago frost destroyed blossoms. Hoping next year will be best.
What we don't have is enough target practice (almost none), close-by year round neighbors and any family members who feel the same way.
Tired of everyone saying "oh we'll just come to you guys". We are no longer polite since the future has become clear to all but 2 yr olds and under.
Now we are clearly saying family first and not much room for others. Our girls and their DHs know what we have and that they and their dogs are welcome.
Girls grew up with this homesteading stuff being learned by us so are clear on its parameters and our weaknesses. Both DHs are good with fyre aRmms. (Deliberately mispelled as A-EYE is searching for all normal people liks US and YOU all the time-you can see posts NOT appear on F-B after posting every day. We post religious stuff and are in those groups. We and others have documented that none of our 'friends' or group members ever see the certain posts.)
Anyhow, I am hoping this site stays open but have already printed off some of Dink's old stuff and others. Very helpful. I am not thinking we will need firestarters ala the old Survival Topics or other website but will need tons of modern supplies as we are hoping that God's plan for us is staying here.
