Yesterday at the meeting I got to teach them some basics via cooking with a cast iron and fire in general. Taught them how to make bannock; which I figured would be the most difficult thing to screw up since all of the ingredients were safe to eat as they already were. They also cooked pasta per the den leader.
I know it blew the mind of at least one scout that after a minute of being taken off the coals the cast iron skillet was still hot enough to cook bannock still (it was a little underdone, but the point was made). Also showed them how to start a fire using a fire steel (I used my Black Beard and some of Black Beard's "hair" to get a wood fire going). I concluded with showing them how they could clean the cast iron using leftover ash and charcoal from the wood fire. As the saying goes: fire can be your worst enemy, but when treated with respect it's your best friend.

It's great that there are still kids interested in learning some useful skills.
