I would very much like to have a new or newer Handheld GPS unit. I have used a Magellan Sport-Trax for many years now and it has done a fine job for me but now the LCD screen has so many burned out lines it is time to get a replacement.
I know that this was covered thoroughly before on another forum that is no longer around but it has not been addressed here yet. I think this would be some helpful information to reference for others who want a GPS or need to upgrade the unit they have. If you would please let us know what type you use and why. If your particular model has certain features that are desirable please point those out as well. Some of the features that I am looking for and think would most likely be on the list of others would be- 1. Affordability 2. User Friendly 3. Waterproof/Floats 4. Available Upgrades and Software/Maps/Topo's ect... 5. PC Compatibility 6. Power Consumption
*Please note* This is not a thread for compass skills/map reading vs. GPS's I know how to use a compass and read a topo map and I also want a GPS. So if you do not use, own or like these please don't comment and let others like myself that do use them provide the information here.
Also note there is no deadline for this poll and you may also retract your vote if need be and you can place a vote for more than one if needed as well.
Thanks for the info! Bj wtrfwlr.

Like my Garmin I did a lot of investigating before I purchased it and I'm not disappointed at all.

I'll be interested in what members have to say about this one. A handheld GPS is on my list of things to get.
I've got one but it's and older one w/o the ability to upload maps, so all it's really good for is marking waypoints and being able to find your way back to it. (ie: you are hunting and you mark your truck as your starting point then you can find your way back)

That seems handy.. I've always used Garmins as Magellans didn't strike me as very intuitive and for a limited technophobe that's pretty important. But I like what that does.. seems like it handles everything you need pretty much.

I was on the hunt for an E-trex and when I did my research the Magellan obviously won me over. My friends love it when we go hiking and I call out our groundspeed every couple minutes, or when I run past them and shout out the burst info lol

Thanks for the reply Jimmy, sounds very close to what I have now and maybe that is all I really need? Since this is the only one I have ever had I'm not sure what else is out there and how I might expand it's usefulness. I guess the Magellan vs Garmin deal is much like Mac or Windows?
From the response I'm thinking there's not a lot of GPS users here. Maybe I should just replace what I have and not worry with any thing any better, I mean the $100 deal I had would get me to my duck holes in the swamp and back out to the truck so why try and learn anything else right?

Wtrfwlr looked like it had enough way points and trails to get you back and forth to your duck holes. I actually liked that one.. seemed to do the job

Like I say that is about the same thing I have and it will get me to a spot and then back to my truck and that is just wonderful! Maybe that is what I should just replace it with but I was in a deer lease back when I was working and had money and a lot of the guys there had units that they could track their paths and stands and then go home and download that onto their PC. From that those tracks and points could be placed on Google Earth and such where you could basically chart your own map. Just trying to learn something new and see what is out there?

My dad always used to say, the more fancy it is, the more gadgets its got, the more likely it is to break down and fail. I think I would trust my 6+ year old handheld to get me to a waypoint simply than relying on my android phone that has GPS but requires a 3G connection and other infrastructure to function well. That said, I just took my brunton mil type compass out of my BOB and replaced it with a Brunton basic style compass. The sighting wire in the mil type was bent, I figure if it gets that way living in my hallway, I cant trust it in the field. K.I.S.S. is my motto these days

I do not want a lot of unproven technology, I would prefer to see if it is worth my while to upgrade to a more advanced GPS unit rather than the one I, as you have, 6+ year old piece. I have a cell phone and it is not GPS capable or I don't have the internet deal on it. It makes and receives calls period.....well I guess it records messages and missed calls too but you know. I was just wanting to see if anyone here used something that was a bit more advanced than my cheapo GPS and what they liked or didn't like about it. I guess the stars are still in the sky but I gotta say it is pretty cool to see this deal say distance to my waypoint and it is 4 ft. and the bow of my boat bumps into the tree I marked the day before!

I've used it for Geocaching and hiking. Going to take it to the BWCA next spring for sure.
