Are you talking chopping stuff up, or splitting wood?
Because if i'm bugging in I would definitely want a splitting maul.
Bugging out I would choose one of several hatchets/axes depending on the situation I plan to be going into.

Are you talking chopping stuff up, or splitting wood? Any tool that you would use to process wood for survival reasons.

Bug out - Without a doubt my ESEE Junglas. Good chopper, great splitter, Good all around knife.
Bug in - Dillion Aero M134 Minigun. Will take down a tree quicker than anything and a useful defense tool.
ok, ok. I'd use my 28" axe.
