Due to my job and bike commute, I carry an assortment of tools in my messenger bag every day. This is a list of what usually carry, please feel free to suggest any additions!
Multi-tool SAK (with 10 feet of paracord in lanyard and compass attached) Bike multi-tool Small assortment of wrenches bike patch kit Water bottle Lighter Condoms (I get them for free at the agency I work for, they can serve as water containers) Maps of NYC and the subway Flashlight Spare batteries Whistle Bandanna Gloves Granola bars Mini first aid kit Pens Notepad Plastic bag Tape Bike pump Measuring tape Hand sanitizer Spare cash
It looks like alot but I carry it all in a Chrome messenger bag thats cavernous, I can fit all that plus small groceries and even a sixpack!)

Must ask: make and model of the SAK?
My only addition to this may be one of those screwdrivers with various screws in various sizes.

I like the little single packs of kleenex, can be TP,.... rubbed with chap stick, fire starter...., and of course kleenex.
We have a pack similar for day long flea markets....No condoms, any more.

The one thing I would add is a mask. I was in the city (uptown) on 911 and it looked like hell from up there. I saw lots of pic of people from down there and the first bombing and they were covered with soot and ash. I know you have a bandana but a mask takes hardly any room and does a much better job.
btw googles might not be a bad addition either.

I was thinking about the mask as well, but figured the bandana would work for a mask as well as lot of other stuff.......It is possible to have TOO much stuff....(yeah, right...LOL)

I forgot to mention I do carry a mask! Always have one on me for housing inspections. Also have a Kleenex mini packet, which I carry along with the hand sanitizer and gloves. Will throw in some goggles next time my boss sends me to Home Depot to pick up supplies.

Home depot only has the cheap plastic ones. they will work but you might be better with a better brand. I find the HD ones fog up too much for me to see anything.

consider adding some cheap swim goggles and a small bottle of apple cider vinegar......got an email that had some info about improvised protection from CS/tear gas. Could be just enough of an edge to get your hiney outta the wringer.
I would also pick up some good chain and sturdy padlock, never hurts to secure your transportation, and it would sure make a dent in a bad guy's noggin if it came down to that

Small prybar or large screwdriver can come in handy. Do they allow pepper spray in NYC? Probably not but, good against dogs and street urchins. Would add a roll of quarters too, good for vending machines. What about a map from city hall for the drainage systems - could be an alternate escape route? Of course, a subway schedule and map would help.
Im just thinkin out loud here, in NYC Id be a fish out of mud. That place is WAY outside my span of reality!

A small pry bar, large screwdriver and pepper spray are all illegal to be walking around with in most large cities.

long socks, couple of pairs, they are usefull not only as intended but with a judicial amount of sand or similar will make a handy cosh in times of trouble, also they work with the condoms to carry the water (condom inside sock) otherwise the condom acts like a water balloon and is a pain to carry

How does one carry these items on a daily basis and not be questioned as to why youre carrying burglary tools? Would you carry them in your back pocket or in a bag? Do you say youre a two tooled tradesman on your way to a jobsite?
